María Corina Machado says Maduro’s capture will go down in history as the day ‘justice defeated tyranny’

Maria Corina Machado said the day Nicolas Maduro was captured “will go down in history as the day justice defeated tyranny” and that President Trump and the United States “did far more than anyone thought possible.”

CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil asked the Venezuelan opposition leader, “Do you think Donald Trump and the United States have done enough today to bring about the freedom and democracy you’re talking about?”

“Well, they certainly did a lot more than anyone thought possible,” Machado said in an exclusive interview with the network. “And like I said: January 3 will go down in history as the day justice defeated tyranny, which people said was impossible to achieve in one flawless operation. So it’s huge.”

But she said there was still work to be done, pointing out that there were around 1,000 political prisoners in Venezuela and calling for their release.

“All political prisoners must be released,” she said. “And the repression must stop immediately.”
