10 killed in attack at Austrian school, including shooter

Nine people were killed in a shooting in a school in the Austrian city in Graz on Tuesday, and the alleged attacker also died, the authorities announced.

The police said at a press conference in the afternoon that the suspect, a 21-year-old Austrian native, committed suicide in a bathroom at Borg Dreierschützengasse high school. Police said they had not yet had a reason for the attack, although they said they had previously attended school.

Two pistols were found there, they said.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said there were six women and three victims, although officials said they were not yet ready to say how many students or teachers.

At least 12 other people were injured, some seriously.

The government said there would be three days of national mourning.

“The unleashing of a Graz school is a national tragedy that has deeply shaken our country,” said Austrian Chancellor Christian Store in a press release.

“There are no words for pain and sorrow that all of us – all in Austria – let’s feel right now,” he added.

Police declare the secure area after 90 minutes

The special forces were one of the people sent to the Borg Dreierschützengasse after a call at 10 a.m. local time.

At 11:30 am, the police, the police wrote on the social network X that the school had been evacuated and that everyone had been taken to a sure meeting point. They wrote that the situation was “secure” and that there is no longer any danger.

Graz, the second largest city in Austria, is located in the south-east of the country and has around 300,000 inhabitants.

In Brussels, the European Union presented condolences.

“Schools are symbols for young people, hope and the future,” wrote the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on X. “It is difficult to bear when schools become places of death and violence.”
