Russian drones hit the Ukrainian port city in the south of Odesa overnight, killing two people and injuring at least 17, Ukrainian authorities announced on Saturday.

A drone struck a residential block of the city, causing three -storey damage and trapping residents, said emergency services.

The two killed in the attack were a married couple, according to the regional governor Oleh Kiper, who added that three children were among the injured. There was no immediate comment from Moscow.

According to the Ministry of Defense of Russia, more than 40 Ukrainian drones were slaughtered overnight and Saturday morning in western Russia and Crimea occupied by Russia.

Long -range drone strikes were a characteristic of war, now in its fourth year. The race by both parties to develop more and more sophisticated and mortal drones transformed war into a testing field for new weapons.

In early June, nearly a third of the Moscow strategic bombers fleet was destroyed or damaged in a Ukrainian secret operation using low -priced drones sneaking in Russian territory.
