Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said that former speaker of the State House, Melissa Hortman and her husband, was killed on a political motivation on Saturday, and a second legislator and his wife were injured and injured.
“We all owe, in Minnesota and across the country, oppose all forms of political violence,” said Walz at a press conference. “Managers of this will be held responsible.”
The search for the person responsible for fire is underway.
The injured legislator was identified as state senator John Hoffman, a democrat, who was elected for the first time in 2012. He heads Hoffman Strategic Advisors, a consulting firm. He was previously vice-president of the Anoka-Hennepin School Board, which manages the largest school district in Minnesota. Hoffman is married and has a daughter.
Hortman was the head of the Democratic Chamber of the State Legislature and a former president of the House. She was elected for the first time in 2004.
Hoffman and Hortman represented districts located north of Minneapolis.
Drew Evans, superintendent of the criminal apprehension office, said the authorities actively sought a suspect. Officials said the suspect was dressed as a law enforcement.
Autopsies will be made to determine the extent of the injuries, but Hortman and his spouse died of ball injury, said Evans.
Public security commissioner Bob Johnson said the suspect pretended to be a police officer.
“The suspect has exploited the confidence of our uniforms, which our uniforms are supposed to represent. This betrayal deeply disturbs those of us who bring the badge with honor and responsibility,” he said.
The shots occurred at a time when the political leaders of the country were attacked, harassed and intimidated because there are deep political divisions.
Giffords, the national organization for the prevention of armed violence led by the former member of the Congress Gabrielle Giffords, said in a press release: “I am horrified and the heart broken by the attack of last night against two patriotic officials.
“My family and I know the horror of a targeted shooting too well. An attack on legislators is an attack on American democracy itself. The leaders must express themselves and condemn the violent extremism that threatens all that this country represents.”
Giffords was shot in the head in 2011 by a shooter who killed six people and injured 12 others. She left Congress in January 2012 to focus on her recovery.
