The crew of a cargo cargo carrying 3,000 vehicles in Mexico, including 800 electric vehicles, an abandoned ship after being able to control a fire aboard the ship in the waters off the chain of Alaska Aleutian Island.
A large plume of smoke was initially observed at the stern of the ship from the bridge in charge of electric vehicles on Tuesday, according to photos of the American coast guard and a Wednesday declaration of the ship’s management company, Maritime Zodiac, based in London. No injury was reported among the 22 crew members of the Morning Midas.
The crew members were abandoned, were evacuated to a rescue canoe and saved by the crew of a neighboring merchant ship called Cosco Hellas in the North Pacific, about 490 kilometers southwest of Adak Island. Adak is approximately 1,930 kilometers west of Anchorage, the largest city in the state.
The crew has launched emergency fire control procedures with the fire suppression system on board the ship, but they could not control the flames.
“The competent authorities have been informed and we are working in close collaboration with emergency workers with a tug in the process of supporting recovery and fire -fighting operations,” Zodiac Maritime said in a statement.
“Our priorities are to ensure the continuous safety of the crew and to protect the marine environment.”
The American Coast Guard said it had sent crews to Adak and a ship to the region. The status of the fire aboard the ship was unknown on Wednesday afternoon, but smoke still emanated, according to the Coast Guard.
Rear Admiral Megan Dean, commander of the seventeenth coastal guard district, said in a statement that, while research and rescue of the response concluded, the Coast Guard worked with Zodiac Maritime to determine how to recover the ship and what will be done.
“We are grateful to the disinterested actions of the three nearby ships that helped the response and the crew of the Cosco Hellas engine ship, which helped save 22 lives,” said Dean.
The 183 -meter Morning Midas, a carrier of cars and trucks, was built in 2006 and sails under a Liberian flag. The cars left Yantai, in China, on May 26, according to the industry’s monitoring site marinetraffic.com. They were shipped to Lazaro Cardenas, an important Pacific port in Mexico.
Earlier this month, a Dutch Security Council called to improve emergency interventions on northern maritime transport roads after a deadly fire of 2023 on a cargo cargo which transported 3,000 cars, including nearly 500 electric vehicles from Germany to Singapore.
This fire killed a person, injured others and burned out of control for a week, and the ship was finally towed to a port in the north of the Netherlands for recovery.
The accident has increased the emphasis on safety problems on the outdoor sea and on the containers falling from the massive cargoles, which have increased considerably in size in recent decades. More than 80% of international trade in volume now arrives by sea, and the largest container ships contain more than three football fields.
