28 Years Later Is An Outrageously Risky Box Office Bet

It has not been 28 years since director Danny Boyle’s beloved Zombie movie “28 days later” hit theaters in 2002, but she has been long enough to start with writer Alex Garland, “28 years later”. It is easily one of the most anticipated horror movies of the summer -2025. It is also a huge risk of Sony Pictures, where the studio sets a remarkable budget not only for this movie but also for possible trilogy. The question is, does this cost a risk?

“28 years later” is currently scheduled to pull $ 42- $ 50 million in home country when it is opened next weekend, Boxage theory. It would be the beginning of the stars to be mildly. When Deadline Notes that the film is experiencing record -breaking sellers to the horror geranium, currently exceeding “Final target blood lines” that opened a higher than expected $ 51 million earlier this year. This film has made almost $ 260 million worldwide since this writing. If the sequel can make similar numbers abroad, it is in very good shape.

It is certainly fine because Boyle and Garland’s Zombie Franchise program has a budget that is said to be a $ 75 million area, which is very expensive for a horror movie. Part of the reason for the horror is usually attractive to studios is that it can be produced cheaply. It is a low -risk/high reward proposal for much of the time.

Still complicated things are that Nia Daco (“Candyman”) has already been described in the sequel “28 years later: The Bone Temple”, “ which is believed to have a similar budget. So Sony is at least hooked for two of these, no matter what happens to the first. It is a considerable investment, given that “28 days later” made only $ 83 million worldwide for $ 8 million in budget a day. Needless to say, this entry must give much more to justify its existence.

Can 28 years later become a rare zombie hit?

The film focuses on the survivors who live on a small island for almost three decades after the Zombi Apocalypse started first, which are connected to the mainland on one road. When one of the group leaves the island to missionary work, he finds completely new secrets and horrors. The stacked exhibition includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“The Fall Guy”), Ralph Fiennes (“Menu”) and Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”). Cillian Murphy, the title “28 weeks later”, is expected to return to the “bone rack”.

Zombie films have been bitter for horror films for decades, but they rarely achieve box office revenue at a level of success, which can justify this big budget. “First World War” was tooth of a disaster to come from $ 540 million in ticket results I answer a $ 190 million budget. Fortunately, Boyle and Garland did not consume to such an extent, but it is that the coming of zombie movies Summer straps are an exception and certainly not the rule.

Working for Sony is that 2007 “28 weeks later” has recently been trendy with Hulu’s viewed charts. It is clear that people are caught up in previous items before the new entry arrives. If the critics are on this movie side, Sony’s big gambling could look very wise to the non-Liia far away in the future.

The question that is answered will be on the opening weekend: Will “28 days later” proves that these films have become a generational favorite, such as “Final Destination” films that level the way for an oversized hit? Or is this more than “Blade Runner 2049” that greatly overestimates that franchising value?? Currently, the numbers support the former answer, which is good news for all parties.

“28 years later” will hit theaters on June 20, 2025.
