Karen Bass says that the curfew for part of the city center will take effect from 8 p.m. local time (3:00 GMT on Wednesday).
The mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, announced a curfew for a small part of the city center of Los Angeles in the demonstrations against the repression of the immigration of American president Donald Trump.
The curfew will apply to an area of 1 square mile (2.6 km2) and will be an effect of 8 p.m. on Tuesday at 6 a.m. Wednesday, local time (03:00 GMT at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday), said Bass at a press conference.
“Many companies have now been affected or vandalized. Last night, there were 23 companies that were pounded, and I think that if you cross the downtown, the graffiti are everywhere and have caused significant damage to businesses and a number of properties, “said Bass.
“So my message is: if you do not live or do not work in the city center, avoid the region. The police will stop the people who break the curfew and you will be prosecuted. ”
Bass said it expects the curfew to remain in force for several days, but stressed that the order only applies to a small part of the city, which covers 502 square miles (1,300 m²).
“I think it is important to emphasize this, not to minimize the vandalism and the violence that took place there – it was important – because it is extremely important to know that what is happening in this Mile Carré does not affect the city,” said Bass.
“Some of the images of manifestations and violence give the appearance that it is a crisis on the city level, and this is not the case.”
