Harris Yulin died this week at the age of 87. The Broadway star had a self-like and memorable and memorable television litania in his name, as a favorite turn of fans Ghostbusters II-but Star Trek Fans will forever remember him for his incredible tower as a Cardassian office clerk traumatized in one of the New deep space‘s First classics of all time, “duo”.
Sometimes a victim of his own success in the eyes of Star Trek Fandom, New deep spaceThe remarkable dramatic arcs through its rear half exploring the federation at war with domination sometimes mean that some fans perceive its first seasons – more broadly on socio -political tension Between the Bajoran people recently released and the presence of Starfleet to guide Bajor in the potential belonging of the Federation – like an Slog to pass before hitting the real Good things. But of several first episodes which shine just as shiny as DS9The best, “duet”, the 19th episode of season one, is absolutely the one that shines the most.
In “Duet”, Yulin plays a delicious double role. It is initially presented as the Cardassian file clerk Aamin Marritza, Treaty on DS9 for a final disease largely contracted by prisoners and workers from the Gallitep concentration camp. Immediately recognized by Kira, herself one of the members of the Resistance who helped to release Gallitep, her interrogation leads her to believe that the Hauat Marritza – who after the first attempts at Obfuscation, made no qualms about hiding, he worked at the camp – is in fact an assumed identity of the infamous Camp commander, Gul Darhe’el. Confronted with the proof of Kira, the mask of “Marritza” falls, taking full credit, angry and insidious to be Darhe’el.
If that was all that was the role of Yulin in “Duo”, it would always be a remarkable turning point. He fills Marritza / Darhe’el with an incredible feeling of a bleak disdain, a man trying simultaneously to shake his story to Gallitep from the eyes of Kira furious, while being confidential enough in his belief to kiss with casualness an alternative story of the atrocities of Gallitep. The chemistry of Yulin having Kira de Nana Visitor as a stage partner is electric, her turmoil between the legitimate rage that Kira feels like a bajoran and his functions as an objective officer on board the DS9 crashed against the calm collection of the Cardassian. Isolated in small ODO detention cells, Darhe’el becomes a spectrum that lingers on the episode and Kira, distressing her moral dilemma on the question of whether she should help someone responsible for the odious atrocities against her people.
But the character has another layer for him: it is Darhe’el It is the supposed personality. Marritza really worked in the administrative wings of Gallitep, but, like Kira, is overshadowed to his soul by his complicity in the war crimes which occurred there. Die in his illness anyway, Marritza has undergone cosmetic surgery to assume the resemblance of Darhe’el, targeted Kira for his link with the resistance cell which released Gallitep, then chose to sacrifice itself to the Bajoran authorities to try to obtain a public conviction for the crimes that Darhe’el committed.

In an instant, Yulin’s performances change, the arrogance and the collection that had defined his role to this point breaking to reveal a man really haunted in many masks. After spending a large part of the episode horrified by him, Marritza becomes immediately and tragically sympathetic, a mirror was kept against Kira as someone still broken by his attempts to treat what they experienced during the reign of Cardassia on Bajor. That Yulin is able to sell this change as convincingly as he had first masked his “real” identity when Darhe’el is remarkable, and that culminates with an incredibly poignant scene where he breaks down in his cell in front of Kira.
“Duet” ends with the tragedy anyway. Unable to provoke himself to “help” Marritza to face Darhe’el, Kira must leave the mourning man – alone for him to be murdered on the DS9 walk by a revengeful bajoran, who, unlike her, could not see the sorrow they all lost during the occupation. New deep space Welld go on to do a lot in exploring the moral nuances behind even the broad, clear-control horrors of the cardassian occupation, the dominion war beyond it, and their own real-world parallels: but it was yulin who helped to first put a complex and sympathetic face on the cardassian and Did So With Such Grace to Give The Series One Of His best hours.
