Yuzvendra Chahal forced to pay ₹4.75 crore alimony to Dhanashree Verma as Bombay HC speeds up divorce case
Bombay High Court has ordered the family court to take the final decision on the divorce case of Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma. The court has suggested waiving the cooling-off period of six months stipulated under Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act for a divorce decree.
The court gave the decision, considering that Yuzvendra Chahal will be playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and won’t be available for over two months. Hence, the high court directed the family court to decide the divorce petition by tomorrow.
Single-judge Justice Madhav Jamdar passed on the directive to the family court and stated: “As petitioner 1 (Chahal) is a participant of IPL, learned counsel informs that he may not be available from 21st March, the learned judge family court is requested to decide petition by tomorrow,”
The high court took the decision to waive the cooling-off period of six months, considering that Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma were living apart for a while. There was also compliance with the consent terms arrived at during mediation between the two parties as regards payment of alimony.
Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma, who got married in 2020, filed a petition for divorce on February 5th earlier this year. The couple also sought a waiver of the cooling-off period, but the family court on February 20 denied the request.
Then partial compliance was made and Chahal was asked to pay ₹4.75 crore to Dhanashree. The leg-spinner notably has paid ₹2.37 crores. After that, the plea was made before the high court related to partial compliance.
The High Court then said (as quoted by Bar and Bench): “Thus it is clear that there is no impediment in the facts and circumstances of the case in granting the applications… Accordingly, the impugned order dated 20th February is quashed and set aside and the writ is allowed,”
Chahal will be next seen in action for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The leg-spinner was acquired by the franchise for INR 18 crore and bagged his highest contact in the league. He will be keen to justify his price tag and help the team win.
Chahal is the leading wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with 205 wickets under his belt. The kind of impact that he has made in the league is impeccable and he would want to prove his worth yet again with T20 World Cup 2026 around the corner.
Chahal has joined the PBKS camp and has been training hard with the team. The Shreyas Iyer-led side will open their campaign against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on 25th March
