Canada imposed on Tuesday to bring new sanctions against hundreds of Russian individuals, entities and ships of the “shadow fleet” of Moscow while the federal government reaffirms its support for Ukraine.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the sanctions package alongside the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before a meeting on the sidelines of Summit G7 In Alberta, with billions of dollars in what he said was “additional” military aid for Ukraine.
“This underlines the importance of standing in total solidarity with Ukraine, with the Ukrainian people, and we had a discussion last night among the leaders of the G7 … We stressed the importance of using maximum pressure against Russia, which refused to come to the table” for cease-fire negotiations, “said Carney.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, said in a press release that the new sanctions target 77 individuals and 39 entities involved in the financing of the Russian war effort or which benefited from the war, as well as those involved in the development of quantum technologies for the Russian army.
In addition, the additional 201 ships involved in the movement of weapons, oil, liquefied natural gas and other goods will face sanctions, which relates the total number to more than 300.
Canada will also impose new export restrictions on the production of chemical and biological weapons, industrial goods and other sensitive technologies, as well as coal restrictions, metals and other imports “through which Russia gains income”, said the government statement.
Anand said that the sanctions package was the largest for Canada’s ships and trade and one of its largest since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Russia’s “Shadow fleet”, made up of hundreds of ships, was created in 2022 after the Western allies imposed a price ceiling and Russian oil sanctions. The ships escape sanctions by the hidden property but are still operated by Moscow.
The Prime Minister’s office said during a reading of Carney’s meeting with Zelenskyy that Canada would also provide Ukraine with an additional $ 2 billion of new military support in Ukraine, with funding for drones, ammunition and armored vehicles, among other capacities.

Carney said before the meeting that helicopters will also be provided via the aid package.
The PMO did not respond immediately when asked to clarify whether the $ 2 billion is new funding. Ottawa previously said that the $ 4.5 billion in military aid already committed by Ottawa since 2022 were to finance the delivery of equipment in Ukraine until 2029.
Carney has said that Canada will also cover $ 2.3 billion in Ukraine loans to help pay the reconstruction of infrastructure destroyed by the invasion of Russia.
This funding is part of a total contribution of $ 5 billion by Canada to a loan program of US $ 50 billion agreed by the G7 last year, which will be paid with the revenues of frozen Russian assets.
“Thank you for your military package,” Zelenskyy told Carney before their meeting. “It is important that our soldiers are strong on the battlefield, to remain strong, until Russia is ready for peace negotiations.
“We are ready for peace negotiations, unconditional ceasefire. I think it’s very important, but for that, we need pressure. ”
G7 leaders – less the American president Donald Trump, who left late Monday in Washington to meet the growing conflict between Israel and Iran – organized a work session alongside Zelenskyy on Tuesday to discuss the war in Ukraine.
Trump pushed Russia and Ukraine to talk to a 30-day ceasefire and the end of the war of more than three years. Russian President Vladimir Putin did not show any desire to accept a cease-fire, and his forces continued to attack Ukraine.
Kyiv was bombed overnight with 32 missiles and more than 440 drones, said Zelenskyy – the deadliest attack in the capital this year.
The attack killed at least 16 people and injured 134, said Ukrainian officials later.
“It is a great tragedy for us and we need the support of our allies,” he said.
Reading the PMO said Carney reiterated Canada’s call for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine and has confirmed Canada’s support to Ukraine.
“To be absolutely clear: support will be unshakable until we obtain a just peace for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” the Prime Minister told journalists.
The United Kingdom announced its own pack of Russian sanctions on Tuesday. He included six entities, 20 “Fleet Shadow” ships and two British residents whom he accused of sending high -end electronics to Moscow.
The European Union was also considering new sanctions, journalists said, president of the European Commission, told journalists.
Trump, however, left Canada without accepting additional American sanctions against Russia. He did not meet Zelenskyy during his stay in Canada, despite the Ukrainian president saying that he had hoped for a meeting.
Trump said on Monday that the group of eight then was wrong to expel Russia after Putin ordered the occupation of Crimea in 2014, a statement that obtained praise from the Kremlin.
