Donald Trump to extend US TikTok ban deadline, White House says

Tiktok will allow you to live at least three months in the United States, because President Donald Trump is about to extend a sales deadline or prohibit for the third time since he took office this year.

“President Trump will sign an additional decree this week to maintain operational Tiktok,” the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday.

The popular video sharing application was to be prohibited in the United States after its Chinese owner, Bytedance, refused to sell it to an American buyer by January.

Tiktok and Bytedance did not immediately respond to requests for comments from the BBC.

Leavitt said that the 90 -day extension would ensure that this transaction is concluded so that the American people can continue to use Tiktok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure. “

Before Leavitt’s announcement, Trump said to the BBC that it would “probably” extend the tiktok.

“We will probably have to get China’s approval,” said Trump. “I think we will get it. I think President Xi will finally approve it.”

When asked if he had the legal basis to extend the deadline, he replied: “We do it.”

Trump’s extension is in contradiction with the will of the congress, which adopted the measurement of the sale or the bank last year. His predecessor, former president Joe Biden, immediately signed the bill.

The law was aimed at responding to the concerns that Tiktok, which has 170 million American users, could be used by China as a tool for spying and political manipulation.

The Supreme Court agreed with a lower court and confirmed the law in January just before Trump took office.

The platform briefly dark for a few hours during the weekend before the inauguration of Trump.

Tiktok congratulated Trump for saving the platform after it was available again.

Trump tried to force a Tiktok sale to an American buyer in 2020, during his first mandate.

But last year, Trump said he loved the platform because he thought it had helped him win the 2024 presidential election.

“I have a warm place in my heart for Tiktok, because I won 34 points,” said Trump in December, although most young voters supported Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

Trump’s unilateral extensions have led some analysts to reject the idea that a ban could take place during his mandate.

“What ban? There is no longer a” building “in the potential prohibition of Tiktok,” said Kelsey Chickring, Forrester principal analyst.

“Tiktok’s behavior also indicates that they are confident in their future because they have deployed new IA video tools to Cannes this week.”

“Small players, like Snap, will try to steal from sharing during this” uncertain moment “, but they will not succeed because this next round for Tiktok is not at all uncertain,” added Ms. Chick.

The Trump administration said in April that the United States and China had deepened an agreement that would have placed the majority control of Tiktok American operations under the American property. This agreement has not yet materialized.

“There are key questions to be resolved,” a spokesperson for Bytedance said at the time. “Any agreement will be subject to approval under Chinese law.”

Trump said he would be open to seeing him sold to the cloud computing oracle, whose co-founder Larry Ellison is a longtime ally of Trump.

The billionaire Frank McCourt, the Canadian businessman Kevin O’Leary and the co-founder of Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, are part of another team that offers for the platform.

And the largest youtuber in the world Jimmy Donaldson – alias MRBEAST – said he also wanted to buy Tiktok as part of another group of investors.
