Waymo’s autonomous cars return to New York in July, the company announced today. The cars will be conducted manually for the moment, a bit like the Cartography tests Waymo ran in 2021, but the company claims that it finally wants to provide the same autonomous service it offers to San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles in New York.
New York’s law law does not currently allow the operation of a vehicle without a human driver, an obvious obstacle for a company like Waymo. As a bridge to offer its full service, Waymo says he asked for a license with the New York Department of Transportation to driving vehicles independently with a specialist trained at the wheel. If NYC DOT approves the permit, the company says it will be the first “deployment of tests” of autonomous vehicles in New York.

The previous excursion of Waymo in New York was focused on navigation on municipal traffic and frozen and snowy weather. Each city in which the company has a new challenge, but the places that are currently operating are mainly in drier and warmer climates. For the moment, obtaining the state and the city on board with autonomous vehicles seems to be the greater problem.
Outside New York, Waymo continues to grow. The company recently expanded its service area Around San Francisco and Los Angeles, came to Austin With the help of Uber in March and plans either to offer paid journeys or to test its self-commissioned system in several other cities During the next year.
