Arrested at the age of 17 at the start of the Nepal civil war in the late 1990s, Devi Khadka was accused of being rebellious, tortured and raped in detention. Rebel leaders exposed her as a “rape victim”, marking her with a taboo that led to depression and social ostracism. Adding these horrors, Khadka joined the rebel front lines and increased in the ranks.
After the end of the war, she was elected to the new Parliament of Nepal but became disillusioned by discovering that the leaders of Nepal sought to bury the painful truth of rape in wartime. As a public face of survivors, Khadka can no longer remain silent. Driven by a fierce determination for justice, she undertook to unite the forgotten women of Nepal and to rebuild the history which was deliberately erased.
Devi Khadka: The Undefated is a documentary film by Subina Shrestha.
