If you’re a hardcore gamer who gets through video games as fast as you get through underwear, there’s a legitimate concern that you’ll run out of new games to play. But the reality is that many of us have games to play, but aren’t going to say no to a few more if the occasion arises. After all, with video game costs rising and tariffs looming, you’ll take any free thing you can get. If that sounds like you, then you’re in luck. We’ve got something you should know about: the Epic Games Store.
The Epic Games Store launched in 2019, following the success of Fortnite, a battle royale game and cultural phenomenon that features brands like Star Wars and has collaborated with celebrities such as Sabrina Carpenter and Snoop Dogg. Epic Games created the store to compete with Valve’s Steam, and it stands out by offering users free games each week, including both indie titles and major triple-A releases.
If you enjoy free games (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), then it’s easy to get them. First, start by creating a free Epic Games account. Then, check the free games section on the official website for weekly offerings. While there may be breaks during holidays, you can usually expect a new free game each week. The best part? You can keep the games forever if you download them before the end of the week.
However, before console gamers get too excited, there’s something they need to know. Firstly, the Epic Games Store is available exclusively on PC, meaning only PC users will be able to benefit from the discounts and deals on offer. (The store also has Mac games, but the free games aren’t Mac-compatible.)
So, if you’re a PC gamer looking for a new game to play, then jump onto the Epic Games Store and grab what’s on offer. Even if you’re not too keen on a game, it’s well worth downloading either way as it doesn’t cost a single dime.
What’s the new free game on the Epic Games Store this week? (June 19 to June 26)
Bureau 81/Epic Games Store
The Operator
Are you a lover of puzzles? Do you find joy in looking at the nooks and crannies and trying to make a picture out of them all? Will you bite someone’s hand off at the mere whiff of a mystery? If so, you’ll definitely want to rush to the Epic Games Store right now and download Bureau 81’s detective, conspiracy-puzzler game, The Operator.
Players are thrust into the world of the FDI, where they sit and work on cracking puzzles to help catch criminals. As a government agent, you’ll have to do whatever is required to get the job done. This means using cutting-edge tools to analyze the evidence left behind and connect the hidden clues. While you may not wield a gun or go on fancy missions, make no mistake, your team at the FDI is relying on you.
However, The Operator isn’t as cut and dry as it may seem. Despite being mostly a puzzle and point-and-click game, it does look as though there is an intriguing storyline baked into the game itself. After all, one of the first things the game tells you in its trailer is that you shouldn’t trust anyone. Does that mean the people you’re working for? Who knows? It looks like you’ll need to play to find out.
Now, if you’re someone who doesn’t find investigation games exciting, we wouldn’t recommend The Operator for you, as uncovering clues makes up the majority of its gameplay.
Usually $12, The Operator is available for free via the Epic Games Store next week. It currently does not have a review score on the Epic Games Store; however, on Steam, its latest reviews have been “Very Positive.”
What will be free on the Epic Games Store next week? (June 26 to July 3)
Shedworks/Epic Games Store
Sable
Now, there some games which are great, and then there are some games that you play which make you wish you could go back in time and play it again without knowing anything about it. Sable from Shedworks falls in the latter. If you’ve not played Sable at least once, then you’re doing it wrong.
Developed by Shedworks and released in September 2021, Sable has players embark on a unique journey as a nomad who goes by the titular name, Sable. Exploration is truly key in this adventure, and you’ll often be rewarded for going off the well-treaded path to see what else is out there.
Better yet, Sable is visually stunning with a variety of different environments and mesmerizing landscapes. Whether you’re trudging over dunes or pushing through the remains of spaceships and other ancient wonders, Sable is genuinely one of the most beautiful games we’ve played. Not only will you feel wonder, but you’ll also be treated to a story that unfolds in such a mesmerizing way that you’ll never forget it.
If you’re still not convinced, we recommend checking out its numerous nominations from the video game industry worldwide. At The Game Awards 2021 it was nominated for Best Debut Indie Game and Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game. at the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards. PC Gamer crowned it as Best Narrative of 2021. That’s just a few impressive accolades it earned, but we hope you get the gist: Sable is the game to play.
Usually $25, Sable will be available for free via the Epic Games Store next week. Epic Game Store customers give it a 4.5 rating out of 5, and they particularly enjoy how suitable the game is for beginners, as well as Sable’s inclusion of unique visuals and fantastic storytelling.
