So the first thing I would do is, if you are concerned is to call 911. Obviously, there are many different uniforms, and it is never wrong to do it.”

“If you are not sure, do not open the door,” said Higgins, adding that citizens can stand next to their door and talk to the police through the door while calling 911 or to the local police service to confirm that an officer was sent to their homes.

Higgins said that the police uniform looked like and, if you live in a city with a small police force, familiarize yourself with its members helps verification.

“If you see an officer not in uniform, not someone you recognize,” said Higgins, “it is prudent to call the police and ask if that person is a police officer.”

Higgins advised citizens to always be aware of their environment and stop in public places, if possible.

If it is unable to stop immediately in a public place, Higgins said that drivers can reduce their window just enough, keep their car by car and ask the officer if it is possible to go to another safer or more public place.

Higgins said the police understand that citizens can be uncertain or nervous and request verification.
