More than 200 armed men on motorcycles attacked a base of the Niger army near the border with Mali, leaving at least 34 dead, said the country’s Ministry of Defense.
The attackers – described by the ministry as “mercenaries” – attacked the base of the western city of Banibangou on Thursday, injuring 14 other soldiers.
The ministry said that his forces had killed “dozens of terrorists” in the battle.
Niger soldiers are under pressure for not having braked the militant attacks, one of his justifications to deposit the president democratically elected Mohamed Bazoum in 2023.
“This Thursday, June 19, a loose and barbaric attack was carried out against [the town of] Banibangou by a horde of several hundred mercenaries aboard eight vehicles and more than 200 motorcycles, “the ministry said in a statement read on state television.
He added that the troops carried out research operations in Banibangou to find the attackers.
The city, which is close to the three border between Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, is subject to the jihadist attacks of Islamist groups.
The Niger leader of the French and American forces which had been strongly involved in the fight against the jihadists.
The neighbors of West Africa, Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali, face an insurrection of different jihadist groups operating in the Sahel region.
The three countries have formed an alliance to fight jihadists and reduces links with the West, turning to Russia and Turkey in place for their security needs.
But violence continued.
