Host “late show” Stephen Colbert Pressed the candidate for New York town hall, Zohran Mamdani, on his position on Israel and how he would fight growing anti -Semitism in the Big Apple.
Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist Member of the State Assembly who saw an increase in polls before the rank of rank on Tuesday, appeared in the end of the evening CBS evening alongside his colleague Rival Democrat Brad Lander, who both made the headlines for giving their approvals for the second classification in an effort to block the ex-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to win democratic appointment.
Colbert underlined the current war between Israel and Iran to ask the two candidates if Israel has “the right to exist” as a nation.

“I support Israel’s vision as a Jewish and democratic state,” replied Lander.
“Mr. Mamdani, same question,” turned around 33 years old. “Does the state of Israel have the right to exist?”
“Yes,” replied Mamdani. “Like all nations, I believe that it has the right to exist and a responsibility to also respect international law.”
The liberal host at the end of the evening, who repeatedly stressed that he did not offer any approval in the mayor’s breed, then pivoted to recognize “the elephant in the room”, noting the “fear” within the Jewish community of the rise of anti -Semitism and what would happen if New York elected Mamdani, a Mamdani, a distant Muslim.
“They are very upset by some of the things you have said in the past, and they are afraid that your mayor will lead to an increase in anti -Semitism, that they believe that it would be more dangerous for them,” Colbert told Mamdani. “What do you say to these New Yorkers who are afraid of not being their mayor, that you would not protect them?”
“You know, I know where this fear comes from,” replied Mamdani. “This is a fear that is based on the horrible attacks that we have seen in Washington, DC, Boulder, Colorado … And it is a fear that I also hear New Yorkers themselves.”
“You know, just a few days after the horrible war crime of October 7, one of my friends told me how he had gone to his synagogue for the services of the Shabbat and he heard the door open behind him, and a tremor rose his spine when he turned around without knowing who was there and what they meant for him,” he continued. “I spoke to a Jewish man in Williamsburg just months ago that the door he had left unlocked for decades is now the one he locks. And finally, it is because we see a crisis of anti -Semitism.”

Mamdani then praised his proposal to commit an increase “800%” of the financing of the anti-hate criminal programming of the Ministry of Community Security.
“Because for your point of view, anti -Semitism is not just something that we should talk about. This is something we have to approach,” Mamdani told Colbert. “We must understand that there is no room in this city, in this country, in this world and-
“And no justification for violence of any kind?” Colbert intervenes.
“No,” replied Mamdani quickly. “There is no room for violence in this city, in this country, in this world. And what I have also found, for many New Yorkers, is an ability to navigate in disagreement.”
Mamdani, who migrated to new York When he was seven years old after having lived in Uganda and South Africa, he recalled an exchange he had with an “older Jewish woman” after the forum of the Democratic Club who whispered him, “I do not agree with you on a problem. I am almost sure that you know which it is and I agree with you on the others, and I will classify you on my vote.”

Colbert then asked Mamdani how he could “build a bridge of understanding” between the Jewish and Muslim communities as mayor of New York. He replied “by highlighting this humanity”.
“For so many of us who have grown up in this city, the difference is something that we celebrate. This is something that we are in fact part of the fabric of this place that we call,” said Mamdani. “And you know, many years ago, I was a campaign director of a Jewish candidate in the State Senate, and I took him to a mosque in Bay Ridge, and after having delivered his speech during Friday prayers, an older Palestinian came to him, and he looked at him and he said:” Cousins. “And I think there is this possibility of building a shared life in our city, because in the end, this is the story of New York.
