BBC News in New York Court
Sean’s legal team “Diddy” Combs set his file in his sex trafficking trial on Tuesday after making arguments for about 20 minutes.
Their short presentation followed nearly seven weeks of arguments and testimonies of witnesses brought by federal prosecutors in New York. The accusation finished pleading in question Tuesday afternoon.
His defense lawyers argued that the government had not completed the burden by proving one of the accusations against him, which he denied vehemently, and the judge should abandon the case against him.
Mr. Combs also confirmed to the court that he would not take the position in his own trial. “This is my decision with my lawyers” not to testify, he told the judge.
Mr. Combs pleaded not guilty to charges of sex, racketeering and transport to engage in prostitution. He risks lifelong in prison if he is found guilty in the program.
Speaking for the first time in court for weeks on Tuesday, Mr. Combs told judge Arun Subramanian that he “did an excellent job”.
“I want to say thank you,” said the rapper to the judge.
Prosecutors allegedly alleged that Mr. Combs used his celebration status and his commercial empire to manage a criminal business for women’s sexual traffic and hide his crimes. During their argumentsThe government has called more than 30 witnesses to the position.
The defense did not call none, rather submitting several text messages between Mr. Combross and her ex-friends, the singer Casandra Ventura, and another victim who testified under the pseudonym Jane.
It is always difficult for the defense teams to decide to call states on the stand, said Mitchell Epner, lawyer and former prosecutor based in New York.
Calling new witnesses can introduce more problems for the defense – and the fact that Mr. Combres is taking a position would have been an even more risky decision, suspended the case mainly on his testimony, said Mr. Epner.
Instead, Mr. Combs ‘lawyers made a quick presentation, showing messages in order to strengthen their argument that Mr. Combs’ friends were voluntary participants in sexual meetings with him and male escorts, who were called monsters.
In an SMS to Mr. Combs that her lawyers read aloud, Jane said “I still have fun” during their monsters, or what she called “hotel nights”.
The rapid defense case intervened after Mr. Combs’ legal team filed a request asking the court to pay their client, saying that the government had not welcomed its burden by proving any of the accusations, including sex trafficking and racketeering.
His lawyer Alexandra Shapiro argued that the victims in the case were capable women who could have left their own will, giving a hint of the points that the legal team is likely to present the arguments later scheduled for this week on Thursday and Friday.
Mr. Combs was “unfortunately violent, but domestic violence is not sexual traffic,” said Shapiro.
Prosecutors argued that Mr. Combs’ ex-girlfriends were forced to undesirable sexual acts with drugs, violence and other means.
