Dozens hospitalised as hot weather hits North America

Dozens of people have been hospitalized for heat -related diseases while the first major heat wave of summer descends to the east of North America.

More than 150 people fell ill during an outdoor graduation ceremony in Paterson, New Jersey on Monday, according to American media, when the city mayor declared the state of emergency.

In Washington DC, six people needed hospital treatment during a concert by the South Korean group “Stray Kids”, according to CBS News, the BBC news partner.

Thermal warnings are in force from the American Midwest to the East Coast, as well as in parts of Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia in Canada, which has an impact on more than 160 million people throughout the week.

Further south along the east coast of the United States, dozens of North Carolina requested treatment for heat-related injuries.

Local media reported that at least 41 people – including children – had been hospitalized in the center of North Carolina.

The local authorities of New Jersey qualified diseases during a pair of graduation ceremonies an incident of “mass victim” due to the number of sick people. This led to the cancellation of certain graduation ceremonies in the region.

The mayor of Paterson, Andre Sayegh, said the state of emergency on heat, canceling all recreational activities in the region and opening cooling centers.

Experts warn that arrow temperatures in parts of North America could worsen the risk of heat -related disease, especially due to high humidity levels.

The prolonged duration of the event, with little night relief – temperatures in certain east cities can remain above 80F (27C).

The heat wave arrives less than a week after the official start of summer. Forecastists say that several places can experience record heights.

On Friday, the mid-Atlantic region is expected to face the most intense conditions, followed by the East Ohio Valley. Several consecutive days of oppressive heat in these areas could considerably increase health risks.

The US National Weather Service (NWS) warned people to “take measures when you see symptoms of heat and heat stroke”.

People are advised to stay outside the sun during the hottest periods of the day, drink a lot of water and check vulnerable people, including the elderly and those with pre -existing health problems.

Although extreme heat spells affect many parts of North America every summer, this heat wave could exceed June records in places.

In New York, the summits on Tuesday can reach 101F (38C) which would equal the highest temperature in June never recorded in the city, dating back to 1966.

The East Coast Energy Companies have called customers to keep energy, due to the fears of power outages, while millions increase their air conditioning units.
