A 18th century sunburn boat was discovered by chance near the majestic stone walls of the medieval city of Croatia in Dubrovnik.
Ivan Bukelic worked on a water pipeline in the old port of Dubrovnik in April when he found a wooden structure buried in the seabed.
“I can now say that I discovered a boat in the old town of Dubrovnik,” said Bukelic, who is a diver and submarine of Dubrovnik.
He added that the ship was less than three feet under the bottom of the sea.
A key commercial port of the Adriatic Sea in medieval times, Dubrovnik was declared a UNESCO heritage site. It attracts huge crowds of tourists, especially during the summer, and is also known as a filming site for the series “Game of Thrones” in HBO.
The remains of the boat in the old port of Dubrovnik were protected for a more in -depth examination.
“We still cannot talk about the type of ship or its dimensions, but we can say with certainty, on the basis of the results of the analysis of the radiocarbon that it came from the end of the 18th century”, archaeologist marine Irena Radic Rossi said.
Radić Rossi said that the objective is to continue research in cooperation with the Croatia Ministry of Culture: “We must protect it for the future”.

Known as “Adriatic pearl”, Dubrovnik has become an important power of the Mediterranean Sea in the 13th century Unesco. The city was seriously damaged by an earthquake in 1667, but was able to keep its churches, palaces and old fountains.
The discovery marks the second time this month that the authorities announced the accidental discovery of an old centuries ship in Europe.
Earlier this month, archaeologists said they had discovered what they say they are the remains of a 16th century merchant ship Over 1.5 mile underwater off the coast of the south of France. The wreck is the deepest discovery in its section of the Mediterranean or any other French waters.
