Egyptian man charged with hate crimes in Boulder Molotov cocktail attack

The suspect accused in a “targeted terrorist attack” in Boulder, Colorado, earlier this month was officially charged on Wednesday from Hate crimes.

An act of federal accusation of the Grand Jury not sealed in Denver on Wednesday accuses Mohamed Sabry Soliman with 12 counts of hatred crimes to use Molotov cocktails to attack a group of people demonstrating in support of Israeli hostages in Gaza. Soliman was initially accused of a chief of a crime of hatred the day after the attack.

Wednesday’s accusation act alleges that Soliman entered a park in front of the Boulder County justice palace on June 1 with a weed sprayer containing a flammable liquid and a black plastic container holding a dozen glass bottles and pots containing flammable liquid. Several of them would have had red rags filled in the high acting like wicks.

Around 1:30 p.m., Soliman approached people who participated in the demonstration “Run for They Lives” and launched two Molotov lit cocktails while shouting “Free Palestine!” The accusation act alleys.

The authorities then found a handwritten document in a vehicle driven by Soliman. The document has excrupted Zionism – a movement to establish and support a Jewish state in Israel – and described Israel as an “entity against cancer”.

Finally, Soliman would have told the authorities that he had discovered the group “Run for They Lives” and identified the participants when he saw them carry flags outside the courthouse.

The group is an organization that facilitates racing and walking events calling for the release of all the hostages held in Gaza after the massacre of October 7, 2023.

The indictment accuses Soliman of having tried to kill eight people – aged 52 to 88 years – who were injured by Molotov cocktails and targeting them because of their perceived or real national origin. Soliman’s defense lawyer argued during an audience last week that the alleged attack was motivated by opposition to Zionism as a political ideology – which is not considered a crime of hatred under the federal law.

Soliman should appear in court this Friday for a hearing in which he will be invited to plead a plea on the accusations of hatred crime.
