A open letter Authors such as Lauren Groff, Lev Grossman, RF Kuang, Dennis Lehane and Geoffrey Maguire call for books to undertake to limit their use of AI tools, for example by committing to hire only human audiob narrators.
The letter maintains that the work of the authors was “stolen” by AI companies: “Rather than paying writers a small percentage of money that our work does for them, someone else will be paid for a technology based on our unpaid work.”
Among other commitments, the authors call on publishers to “prove that they will never publish books created by the machine” and “will not replace their human staff with AI tools or degrade their positions in AI monitors”.
While the initial letter has been signed by an already impressive list of writers, NPR reports that 1,100 other signatures were added within 24 hours of the initial publication.
The authors also pursue technological companies on the use of their books to train AI models, but federal judges has treated significant blows to these prosecution Earlier this week.
