Two dead and hundreds arrested in France after PSG Champions League win

Two people died and hundreds were arrested through France after the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) fans celebrated the club’s victory in the Champions League final, according to the French Interior Ministry.

In the southwest city of Dax, a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the trunk late Saturday evening, local media reported.

A 23 -year -old man driving a scooter in central Paris was also killed after being hit by a vehicle, said the prosecutor’s office.

Lightning rockets and fireworks have been launched, broken abstams broke and cars burnt down in the midst of wild celebrations while PSG won the club’s largest European football price for the first time in their history.

The prefect of the Paris police, Laurent Nuñez, said that the parade of the PSG Champions League Trophy will take place on Sunday evening – but that there will be an increased presence of the police and the military on the ground.

Nuñez spoke after the French Interior Ministry said that 192 people were injured during night clashes and 559 people arrested, including 491 in Paris.

Twenty-two police officers and seven firefighters were injured, said the ministry, adding that 264 vehicles had been burnt down.

Nuñez said: “The toll is lower than what we have seen in the past, but we never get used to this kind of abuse, with people who have only come to commit acts of vandalism and who have not even watched the match, and we will always have a very firm answer.”

“This is only half-time for us because PSG players come to Paris,” he said, with an expected celebration around the Parc des Princes where players will meet fans.

“Here again, we expect clashes, scuffles and we will be there and we will be very strong in our response against the Vandals, against the thieves who get up to the police.

“We will not tolerate any abuse today and fans who want to take advantage of the parade can do it safely.”

He added that “PSG supporters should not be mixed with gangs of looters and vandals”.

In addition, the Paris prosecutor’s office told the BBC “several stores had been looted” in the Place des Ternes region. Thirty people were arrested and placed in police custody near a locker on foot on the champions-Elysées that have been stolen, the office said.

Elsewhere through France, the mayor of Dax Julien Dubois, reacting to the fatal stab wounds, said that her “thoughts concerned the young victim, her family and his friends”.

“We are struck down by the whole drama tonight,” he wrote on social networks. “It is advisable to shed light on these facts quickly in order to severely punish the attacker.”

While the clashes broke out near the city champion of the city and the PSG princes’ park stadium, the majority of fans celebrated the 5-0 victory of PSG over Milan, with a lot of singing and dance in the streets or raising their car horns.

The Eiffel Tower was lit by blue and red colors of PSG.

French President Emmanuel Macron, a passionate about Olympique de Marseille, posted on X: “A glorious day for PSG! Bravo, we are all proud. Paris, the capital of Europe this evening.”

About 5,400 police officers were deployed through Paris in anticipation of noisy celebrations.

At least 300 detained people were suspected of having fireworks and causing troubles, the Paris police said.

“The troublemakers on the Champs-Elysis sought to create incidents and have come into contact with the police several times by launching large fireworks and other objects,” the police said in a statement.

The riot police would have used a water cannon to prevent a crowd from reaching the triumph arc and pulled tear gas in the crowd.

Other clashes between the police and the crowds occurred on the road to the Paris cycle. At least two cars were burnt down near the princes’ park.

The French Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau took a hard line against the disorder, writing on social networks: “The real supporters of PSG take advantage of the magnificent match of their team.

“Meanwhile, the barbarians went down to the streets of Paris to commit crimes and provoke the police.

“It is unbearable that it is unthinkable to party without fear of the savagery of a minority of thugs which respect nothing.”

Meanwhile, outside Paris, the police said that a car had plowed PSG fans in Grenoble in the south-east of France, leaving four injured.

All of these injuries came from the same family, police said. Two were seriously injured.

The driver returned to the police and was put in arrest. A source close to the investigation told the AFP news agency that the driver had not acted intentionally.

The trophy parade in the center of Paris – scheduled for 5:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. BST) – will take place for an hour from the Champs Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe.

After the parade, the PSG players and staff will be received at the Palace of the Élysée and later Sunday evening, the trophy will be presented in front of the subscription holders of the Parc des Princes season.
