A figure of wax by French president Emmanuel Macron was stolen from a Paris museum by environmental activists who have disguised themselves as employees.
Greenpeace activists have entered the Grevin museum pretending to be tourists before changing their clothes, covering the statue with coverage and withdrawing it from an emergency exit, a police source told the French AFP press agency.
The wax later reappeared outside the Russian Embassy, where activists denounced Macron’s attitude towards French companies who continue to do business with Russia since its large -scale invasion of Ukraine.
Macron was one of Kyiv’s most vocal supporters and was a leading figure in European efforts to ensure a cease-fire.
Images have shown militants placing wax in front of the embassy alongside signs and signs.
No arrest was made and the wax, worth € 40,000 (£ 33,765; $ 45,674) has not yet been recovered.
Jean-François Julliard, chief of Greenpeace France, told AFP that Paris “played a double game” to support Ukraine while allowing French companies to continue with imports of gas and fertilizers from Russia.
He said Macron “embodies this double speech” and “should be the first” among European leaders to end commercial contracts with Russian companies.
BBC analysis in May has shown that Russia has continued to make billions of exports of fossil fuels to the west, especially towards the EU.
Russia had earned more than 883 billion euros (740 billion pounds sterling; 973 billion dollars) in income from fossil fuels since the start of the large -scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, including 228 billion euros from the countries that sanctioned it, According to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).
The lion’s share, 209 billion euros (176 billion pounds sterling; 238 billion dollars), from EU member states – from this figure, 17.9 billion euros (15.1 billion pounds sterling; $ 20.4 billion) came from France.
Russian estimates indicate that gas exports to Europe increased up to 20% in 2024, exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) reaching record levels. Currently, half of Russia’s LNG exports go to the EU, says CREA.
In addition to offering military aid to kyiv, France has also imposed a certain number of sanctions on Russia and the Russians since the start of the war in Ukraine.
Macron also warned against additional sanctions against Moscow if he does not cooperate in efforts to negotiate a ceasefire.
