Anthropic co-founder on cutting access to Windsurf: ‘It would be odd for us to sell Claude to OpenAI’

The co-founder of Anthropic and Director of Sciences, Jared Kaplan, said that his company had reduced direct access to Windisurf to the Claude d’Anthropic models in large part because of rumors and reports according to Openai, his biggest competitor, acquires the AI coding assistant.

“We really try to activate our customers who will work sustainably with us in the future,” said Kaplan in an interview on stage Thursday with Techcrunch TC sessions: AI 2025.

“I think it would be strange for us to sell Claude to Openai,” Kaplan said.

The comment comes only a few weeks after Bloomberg reported that OPENAI acquires windsurfing for $ 3 billion. Earlier this week, Windsurf said that Anthropic cut its direct access to Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3.7 SONNETTwo of the most popular AI models for coding, forcing the startup to find third -party computer suppliers to relatively short notice. Windsurf said that he was disappointed with Anthropic’s decision and that this could cause short -term instability for users who try to access Claude via Windsurf.

Windsurf refused to comment on Kaplan’s remarks, and an Openai spokesperson did not immediately respond to the request of Techcrunch. Companies have not confirmed the acquisition rumors.

Part of the reason why Anthropic cut Windsurf access to Claude, according to Kaplan, is that the company is completely limited in computer science today. Anthropic would like to reserve his IT for what Kaplan called “sustainable partnerships”.

However, Kaplan said that the company hoped to considerably increase the availability of the models it can offer to users and developers in the coming months. He added that Anthropic has just started to unlock the capacity on a new computer cluster of his partner, Amazon, who, according to him, is “really great and continues to get to the scale”.

While Anthropic is moving away from Windsurf, Kaplan said that he collaborated with other customers creating AI coding tools, such as the cursor – a company that Kaplan said that Anthropic expects to work for a long time. Kaplan rejected the idea that Anthropic was in competition with companies like Cursor, which develops its own AI models.

Meanwhile, Kaplan says that Anthropic is increasingly focused on the development of its own agent coding products, such as Claude Code, rather than the IA chatbot experiences. While companies like Openai, Google and Meta are competing for the most popular chatbot platform, Kaplan said that the chatbot paradigm limited because of its static nature, and that AI agents would be long-term for users.
