A premature newborn in Ontario, Canada, died after having contracted measles – the first death this year linked to an epidemic of preventible vaccine disease in the country.
Ontarians in Ontarios reported Death Thursday. The child caught their mother’s viral infection, which was not vaccinated by measles. Canada, the United States and Mexico have all faced an increase in measles epidemics in 2025, powered by low vaccination rates in certain regions.
“It is with deep sadness that I confirm that an infant, born prematurely and infected with measles, is tragically died in southwest Ontario,” said Kieran Moore, chief of health in Ontario, in a press release.
Epidemics of the in progress measles in North America would have started in Ontario last fall. In January 2025, measles began to strike parts of Texas, the cases finally spreading to neighboring states and in northern Mexico. Epidemics have largely occurred in the communities of rural mennonites where people often give up routine vaccinations and other health services provided by external doctors. The United States and Mexico have each reported approximately 1,000 cases of measles this year, while more than 2,700 cases were reported in Canada, mainly in Ontario. But these figures are almost certainly an underestimation of the problem.
According to Moore, the child contracted measles in the uterus, which may have contributed to their premature birth. The child had other medical complications unrelated to the virus, however, it is therefore possible that the infection was not the main or the only factor of their death. Gaspeking in general has a very low mortality rate, but it is very contagious in non -vaccinated people and is known to be more dangerous for the development of fetus and very young children. Over 100,000 people deceased Doggy in the world in 2023, according to the World Health Organization, most of whom were children under the age of five.
Although it is the first death of Canada linked to measles this year, it is not the first in North America. Until now, three confirmed deaths of measles have been confirmed, while more than 100 people (mainly children) have been hospitalized. Unlike the last death, two of these American deaths occurred In children without pre -existing health problems.
Measles have resurfaced in a large part of the world recently, helped by the drop in vaccination rates. But while this problem has developed over time, the situation in the United States is only expected to worsen under the current presidential administration. Many people appointed by President Donald Trump – in the private secretary for health and social services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have regularly spread a disinformation on the safety of vaccines, including the combination of measles, mumps and rubbing vaccine. Kennedy has both minimized the in progress epidemics and supported the dubious treatments of measles with little or no evidence behind them, such as supplements of cod liver oil. Many Americans remain today terribly in the dark On the severity of these epidemics and the importance of vaccination.
“Anyone who is not vaccinated is in danger and I exhort everyone, but especially those who can become pregnant, to ensure that they have received two doses of the ROR vaccine, which will protect both a parent and a baby. This vaccine has been used safely for over 50 years and is very effective,” noted Moore in his announcement of the child’s death.
