The sirens of air raid sounded through Israel while Iranian missiles struck the country in retaliation for deadly Israeli attacks against nuclear sites and military leaders.
“Do not think they hit and it’s over. No. They started work and started war,” said the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a recorded message. “We do not allow them to escape safely from this great crime they have committed.”
Friday, the rumble of the explosions could be heard throughout Jerusalem, and the Israeli television channels showed that plumes of smoke rose to Tel Aviv after an apparent strike of missiles. There was no immediate report of victims.
The army said dozens of missiles had been launched and that the army ordered residents of the country to move to bombs shelters.
Israel launched a wave of strikes across Iran on Friday that targeted its nuclear program and its military sitesKilling at least three best military officers and raising the prospect of a total war between the two bitter opponents of the Middle East. He seemed to be the most important attack that Iran has been confronted since his 1980s war with Iraq.
The strikes occurred in the middle of the simmer tensions on the rapid nuclear program of Iran.
For years, Israel had threatened such a strike and successive American administrations had sought to prevent it, fearing that he was putting on a broader conflict through the Middle East, and that it would be ineffective to destroy the dispersed and hardened nuclear program of Iran.
