Carlos Alcaraz defends his French title with one of the greatest returns in tennis against Jannik Sinner.
Carlos Alcaraz joined two sets and saved three match points to beat Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10-2) in a classic victory of all time at the Open of France-a title that Spaniard won for a second consecutive year.
Alcaraz, who won its fifth Grand Colem tournament in as many finalsproduced one of the greatest feedback in the history of the Clay-Court tournament.
It was even better than his performance here last year, when he returned from 2-1 down in sets in the final against Alexander Zverev. This time, Alcaraz came the feat of Novak Djokovic from the 2021 final in Roland-Garros, when the major winner 24 times retaliated with two sets to beat Stefanos Tsisipas.
“I’m just proud. I’m really, really very happy,” said Alcaraz after the match on Sunday before renting Sinner. “I know how much you continue this tournament. You are going to be champion, not once, but a lot, several times. It is a privilege to share the court with you in each tournament, making this story with you.”
It was the first time that the sinner has lost a final of the Grand Chelem, but the fifth consecutive time, he now lost against Alcaraz, who won the 20th tennis title in his career at the age of 22.
It was also the longest Open of France – 5 hours, 29 minutes – in the open age.
After 3 hours, 43 minutes, the sinner had his first match point. But with just over five hours since the start of the match, Alcaraz served for the title at 5-4.
The drama was still not finished.
The sinner made a remarkable recovery from another superb Alcaraz shot. At the very limit when he could stretch, the sinner slipped the ball on the net, the ball landing with the sweetness of an autumn sheet and out of the reach of Alcaraz to make it 15-40.
When Sinner won the match to do it 5-5, it was his turn to milking the applause and he was two points from the victory in the 12th match, with Alcaraz in service and at 15-30 and in Deuce.
But Alcaraz made an amazing cross-terrain setback to make 6-6 and force a break in equality, the crowd is unleashed when the cross-cut winner of Alcaraz was 4-0.
The sinner could not find a way of return, and Alcaraz won the match with a superb fore -heading on the line, then fell on his back to celebrate. Then he rushed to dance and hug the team members in his box.
“I am very happy for you, and you deserve it, so congratulations,” said the 23 -year -old sinner in Alcaraz. “It’s an incredible trophy, so I won’t sleep very well tonight, but it’s okay.”
