Anthony Gordon withdraws from England squad after picking up injury in Albania win

Anthony Gordon has withdrawn from the England squad due to injury ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Latvia.

The Newcastle winger sustained a hip injury during Friday’s 2-0 victory over Albania after coming on as a substitute.

Despite only being on the field for 15 minutes, the 24-year-old was seen limping off at the final whistle before heading down the tunnel.

In an official statement on Sunday, England said: “Anthony Gordon has withdrawn from Three Lions camp having sustained an injury during Friday night’s 2-0 win over Albania.

“The forward has returned to Newcastle United for further assessment.”

Following a medical scan, Gordon will continue his rehabilitation at Newcastle, ruling him out of Monday’s match against Latvia at Wembley – the second game under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

After Friday’s game, Tuchel commented on Gordon’s injury, saying: “He looks injured. First of all I thought it’s his stomach but it’s his hip and it does not look good. It’s a bit worrying, yeah.”

Gordon, who was suspended for Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final win last Sunday, is also set to miss their first game after the international break, a home fixture against Brentford on April 2.

However, if he recovers in time, he could be available for selection against Leicester City on April 7.

The injury is a setback for Gordon, who was hoping to use the Latvia match as an opportunity to stake his claim for more playing time under Tuchel.

The England manager had expressed some dissatisfaction with the performances of starting wingers Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford after the Albania win, hinting that there could be room for changes.

“We hope for more impact in these positions,” Tuchel said. “More dribbling and more aggressive runs towards the box. In general that was missing. The chances come from the little runs behind the line. They were not as decisive as they can be.

“Both our wingers who started were not as impactful as they can be in club football. I’m not so sure why we struggled to bring the ball quickly to them.

“We lacked runs off the ball. It was a little bit too much passing, not enough dribbling, not aggressive enough towards goal. They trained very well, they were decisive in training.

“That’s why I also think they deserved (to start), they were very good in the last weeks with their clubs. We will keep on encouraging them.”
