At least 66 children died of malnutrition in Gaza during the War of Israel, the authorities of the Palestinian enclave said, condemning a tight Israeli seat which prevented the entry of milk, nutritional supplements and other food aid.
The Declaration of the Gaza Government’s media office on Saturday while Israeli forces intensified their attacks on the territory, killing at least 60 Palestinians, including 20 people in the Tuffah district of Gaza City.
The media office said that the deadly blockade of Israel is a “war crime” and reveals its “deliberate use of famine as a weapon to exterminate civilians”.
The office denounced what he called “this crime in progress against childhood in the Gaza Strip” as well as “shameful international silence concerning the suffering of children who are left to prey hunger, illness and slow death”.
He also said that he held Israel, as well as his allies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, responsible for “this disaster”, and immediately urged the United Nations to intervene and open the passages to Gaza immediately.
The declaration made a few days after the United Nations Children’s Agency (UNICEF) warned that the number of malnutrition children in the Gaza Strip increased at an “alarming rate”. He said that at least 5,119 children, between 6 months and 5 years old, had been admitted for treatment for acute malnutrition in May only.
UNICEF said that the figure represents an increase of almost 50% compared to the 3,444 children admitted in April, and an increase of 150% compared to February when a cease-fire was in force and that the aid entered Gaza in large quantities.
“In just 150 days, from the beginning of the year until the end of May, 16,736 children – an average of 112 children per day – were admitted for malnutrition treatment in the Gaza Strip,” said regional director of the Middle East and North Africa, Edouard Beigbeder.
“Each of these cases is avoidable. Food, water and nutrition treatments they desperately need are prevented from reaching them,” he added. “Artificial decisions that cost lives. Israel should urgently allow large -scale delivery of vital aid through all border passages. ”
Israel intensifies attacks against North Gaza
Warnings came while the Palestinians were crying the 60 people killed in Israeli attacks on Saturday. In the Tuffah district of Gaza City, the rescuers continued the search for survivors after two consecutive Israeli strikes flattened several residential buildings, killing at least 20 people.
A few nine children were among the victims.
“We were sitting peacefully when we received a private issue telling us to evacuate the entire whole block-a residential area belonging to the Al-Nakhalah family. As you can see, the whole block is almost wiped out,” a resident, Mahmoud al-Nakhala, told Al Jazera.
“We still don’t know why two three -story houses have been targeted … It is heartbreaking that people look at what’s going on in Gaza – suffering, massacres – and remain silent. At this point, we can not even understand what is going on here,” he said.
The bombings in Tuffah followed another air raid on tents housing displaced people in Gaza City.
At least 13 people were killed, including several children.
Other victims included a person who was shot by a bullet near an aid distribution point led by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) supported by the United States in the south of Rafah.
According to Gaza officials, Israeli forces have killed more than 550 people on and near the GHF sites, since the controversial group began its operations on May 19.
Hani Mahmoud, from Al Jazeera, reporting from Gaza City, said GHF remains the only food source in the strip while Israel continues to place serious restrictions at the entrance to supplies by other groups.
“Many people here are trying to stay away from the GHF centers because of the danger involved in breastfed, due to the current and deliberate shootings of aid seekers,” said Mahmoud. “But again, staying away is not an answer, because if there are no food packages, it means that children will go to bed hungry.”
Aid groups condemned the “militarized” operations of the GHF, with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres saying on Friday that the operation supported by the United States in Gaza was “intrinsically dangerous” and “killing people”.
The Haaretz newspaper of Israel reported that the Israeli troops in Gaza were ordered to shoot With unarmed Palestinians on GHF sites, a soldier describing the scenes as a “field of killing”.
The Israeli army denied the complaint.
Chris Doyle, director of the British Arab-British Council, said that the GHF aid distribution system in Gaza is “abomination and total shame”.
“It is an inversion of all the world humanitarian principles on independence, impartiality and neutrality,” he told Al Jazeera.
“As we have seen, about 550 Palestinians were killed while trying to bring food there, to travel on foot, long trips, then families are worried about their return,” said Doyle.
He then described the situation as another example of the way in which “Israel enjoys a complete and total impunity of one of the standards of war, of international law”.
“This must be dismantled now, and the appropriate delivery systems and the distribution of aid are completely replaced,” he added.
