The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says that the earthquake records a magnitude of 5.6.
At least one person was killed, and five others injured after an earthquake of 5.6 magnitude struck Peru and were felt throughout the capital, Lima.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said on Sunday that the earthquake had taken place at 11:35 am (4:35 pm GMT), local time in the Pacific Ocean, with its epicenter located 23 km (14 miles) southwest of Callao, a port city west of the capital Lima.
The Peruvian presidency reported that the extent of the earthquake was higher than the USGS evaluation, recording a magnitude of 6.1. The earthquake did not generate a tsunami warning.
In an article on X, the presidency said that President Dina Boluarte is currently going to Callao to monitor the coast after the tremor.
Police colonel Ramiro Clauco told Peruvian broadcaster RPP Radio that a 36 -year -old man died in the north of Lima while “held in front of his vehicle while waiting for a passenger”.
The emergency operations center added that five people were treated in hospital and that damage had been reported on roads and educational centers.
According to Hernando Tavera, executive president of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, who spoke with the local television channel N, all the districts of Lima felt the earthquake.
Local radio stations also reported that the earthquake had led to the cancellation of a great football match scheduled in Lima.
The country of South America is found on what is called the “Ring of Fire”, a path along the Pacific Ocean which is frequently struck by earthquakes and active volcanic activity, Peru making at least 100 earthquakes detectable each year.
The last major earthquake took place in 2021 in the Amazon region, recording an amplitude of 7.5 and left 12 people injured, destroying more than 70 houses.
The most disastrous earthquake to strike the country was in 1970 and hit the Peru anchor region, causing mass landslides that resulted in around 70,000 people.
