Boxing Results: Austin Williams Defeats Patrice Volny; Edgar Berlanga Scores Quick Knockout
Middleweight Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams (18-1, 12 KOs) won a surprisingly wide 12 round unanimous decision in a fight that appeared to be close enough to be a draw against second-tier fighter Patrice Volny (19-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday night in their headliner at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.

Williams, 28, focused on using his volume punching style to outwork the bigger, stronger, and much older 35-year-old Volny. The rounds were very close, making it impossible to determine who was getting the better of the action. In the end, the judges focused on Ammo’s strong finish, but the scores were out of whack for the way the fight played out.

After the fight, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn said he wants to give Ammo Williams a title shot before the end of the year. He didn’t say which champion, but given that Ammo is ranked highest with the WBA at #7, Hearn will target champion Erislandy Lara for Williams to fight.
I don’t see Ammo beating Lara, WBC champion Carlos Adames and especially not IBF/WBO champ Janibek Alimkhanuly. Those guys hit too hard, and have too much talent for the still very green light-hitting Ammo Williams. He fights like he’s musclebound, and can’t generate power for some reason.
“That was by far the best win of his career,” said promoter Eddie Hearn about Ammo Williams. “The middleweight division is kind of dead now. I think in 2025, it’s time for that man to fight for a world title.”
In the other notable fight on the card, super middleweight or should I say cruiserweight, Edgar Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) destroyed Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz (20-1-1, 16 KOs) in the first round.
Berlanga was coming off his loss to Canelo Alvarez last September, and you could tell from his fleshy, overweight physique that he’d been eating well from “the bag” that he got for that fight.
Berlanga was 193 lbs for that fight, but tonight, he looked even heavier, which gave the 35-year-old Gonzalez-Ortiz no chance of winning; not that he would ever stand a chance at any weight. This was a designed mismatch.
The heavily tattooed Berlanga dropped Gonzalez-Ortiz three times with hard punches to the head. The referee stepped in and waved it off after the third knockdown. The time was at 2:31 of the first. Gonzalez-Ortiz looked badly out of shape, showing a flabby midsection from being out of the ring for a solid ten years.
