A Brazilian tourist who fell by hiking near the crater of an active volcano in Indonesia was found dead, said his family and rescuers.
Juliana Marins survived the initial fall of a cliff during a group hike early in the morning along a steep path on Mount Rinjani, with rescuers signaling her cries to get help on Saturday.
But the efforts to reach the 26 -year -old man in the following days were hampered by the extreme terrain and the misty time, according to the Indonesian authorities.
After a complex rescue operation, the teams finally reached his body on Tuesday, his family said in a press release on social networks.
“With great sadness, we inform you that she has not survived,” said the family of sailors. “We remain very grateful for all prayers, affection messages and the support we have received.”
Sailors had hike around Thailand and Vietnam before arriving on the island of Lombok, Indonesia.
She was hiking to the second highest volcano in Indonesia with five friends and a guide on Saturday around 06:30 am (11:30 p.m. GMT on Friday), when the authorities said that she had fallen from a “cliff that surrounds the path next to the crater of the volcano”.
A member of the group said on Brazilian television that the land was slippery, the “very hard” climb and poor visibility.
Sequences of drones and other clips filmed by hikers circulating online and transported by the Brazilian media also seem to show its distress but living and in motion on Saturday. It was seen sitting and moving in a gray floor, well below a hiking trail.
But the rescuers could not find it when they went down 300 m (984 feet) where they thought it was located, or replied when they called it.
On Sunday morning, drone images showed that it was no longer in the same place, said the park authorities, who added that the thick fog had embarrassed the rescue efforts and affected the use of a thermal drone.
On Monday, the rescuers were able to locate sailors again, which seemed to have fallen even further, but they had to stop the work due to “climatic conditions”, according to the family.
Research resumed on Tuesday and rescuers finally reached his body after having dropped 600m in a ravine, the Indonesian research and rescue agency said in a statement.
However, bad weather has meant that they have not yet recovered their body. Efforts should resume early Wednesday morning.
In total, 50 people were involved in the rescue operation, the head of research and rescue Mohammad Syaffi said in a press release.
The 3,726 m volcano attracts thousands of visitors each year.
However, several people have died by trying to climb it in recent years – including a Malaysian tourist last month, reported the Reuters news agency. The sea family expressed their concern about the fact that the path was not closed after its fall.
