Canada, India agree to restore diplomatic services after leaders meet at G7 – National


Canada and India have agreed to appoint new high commissioners and restore regular diplomatic services to citizens of the two countries, following a meeting between the Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Narendra Modi On the touch of Summit G7 in Alberta.

The Prime Minister’s office confirmed this decision when reading the meeting on Tuesday.

Canada expelled six Indian diplomats and consular officials last fall, following news that the police had linked Indian government agents to a targeted campaign against Canadian citizens.

India was distinguished by Canadian intelligence managers as a prolific author of foreign interference in Canada, including transnational repression – a problem in G7 leaders in One of the many joint declarations issued as their summit ended.

While their bilateral meeting began, Carney said it was “a great honor” to welcome Modi in the G7.

“This testifies to the importance of your country, your leadership and the importance of the problems we seek to approach together,” said Carney, noting who understands the energy transition, the future of AI and the fight against transnational repression and terrorism.

Speaking through a translator, Modi said that he thought that joining the G7 summit was an excellent opportunity to serve the world good.

“I believe that India-Canada relations are extremely important and that India and Canada should work together,” said Modi, noting that the two countries represent democratic values.

Carney invited Modi at the top with a number of other world leaders who are not part of the G7. Modi’s visit caused a strong protest from Sikhs separatist groups.

In 2023 and 2024, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the RCMP said that there were evidence connecting Indian government agents to the murder of the Canadian Sikh Sikh Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia in June 2023.

Last October, RCMP commissioner Mike Duheme said the police had evidence connecting Indian government officials to other crimes in Canada, including extortion, coercion and homicide.

The leaders of the G7 noted in a joint declaration that they are “deeply concerned about the growing reports of transnational repression”, defined in the declaration as an aggressive form of foreign interference in which states or their proxies try to intimidate, harass, harm or force people outside their borders.

The declaration condemns all forms of transnational repression, which may include a range of activities from assassination to cyber-surveillance.

He calls on member countries to report on transnational repression in the public reports of the G7 rapid response mechanism and to develop a framework to cooperate to counter such activities.
