European Union Officials say Canada is likely to sign a defense Supply contract with the continent when Prime Minister Mark Carney goes to Brussels later this month.
Carney is expected to visit Brussels on June 23 for the Canada-EU summit, where he will meet the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the president of the European Council António Costa.
Participation in the G7 summit in Alberta today, the two EU leaders say that Canada’s involvement in what they call “rapidly evolving defense architecture” should deepen.
Von Der Leyen says that Canada will sign a security and defense partnership with the EU, which will allow it to join a European loans program for joint defense projects.
The 150 billion euros program is called Security Action for Europe, or safe, and is part of the Rearm Europe initiative that Carney says that it wants Canada to join.
Von der Leyen says that the safe program can be joined by “allies, friends and partners very close to Europe and that the agreement will allow this month will allow negotiations on the introduction of Canada in the program.
