A Canadian citizen died while he was in police immigration and customs application earlier this week, the agency said.
Johnny Noviello, 49, died in a detention center in Florida on Monday, said a press release on ice.
The cause of death is unknown and is the subject of an investigation, according to the press release.
Despite Canadian citizenship, Novielllo had been in the United States since 1988 and has become a legal permanent resident in 1991, the statement said.
In 2023, he was found guilty of a number of offenses – including racketeering and drug trafficking – and had been sentenced to 12 months in prison.
Public court documents said Novielllo had an epilepsy that required medication to control her crises.
ICE agents arrested Noviello in May and he was held “waiting proceedings,” said the agency’s press release.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, published a statement on social networks on Thursday saying that the government had been informed of the death of Noivello.
“Canadian consular officials are urgently looking for more information from US officials. I offer my sincere condolences to the family,” she wrote in an article on X.

Noviello’s death occurs while ice agents have made radical arrests in the United States.
Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump has published a series of decrees that aim to repress illegal immigration and advance his goal of deporting millions of immigrants to the United States illegally.
Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff to the White House and Trump’s immigration policies, pushed the ice to target at least 3,000 arrests per day, against around 650 per day during the first five months of Trump’s second term.

Jasmine Mooney from British Columbia was arrested and held for almost two weeks after trying to renew a work visa. She was released and returned to Canada in mid-March.
