The conflict, now in its 12th day, began with Israel targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites, claiming that it could not allow Tehran to develop atomic weapons – and that it feared that the Islamic Republic is close. Iran has long argued that its program is peaceful.
Many feared that the war would widen after the United States joined the attacks by abandoning bunker bombs over the weekend and that Israel has widened the types of targets it struck.
But after Tehran launched a limited reprisal strike on an American military base in Qatar on Monday, Trump announced the ceasefire.
The two parties accepted the agreement, but it is not clear if it will hold.
“Tehran trembled,” warned the Israeli Minister of Finance Betzalel Smotrich on X, raising the specter that war could continue.

The Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, said that his country did not shoot Israel if he had not been dismissed, but that a “final decision on the end of our military operations will be taken later”.
To guarantee the ceasefire, Trump had communicated directly with Netanyahu, according to a senior White House official who insisted on anonymity to discuss Monday talks. Vice-President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Steve Witkoff’s special envoy communicated with the Iranians through direct and indirect channels.
The White House argued that the American bombings helped the Israelis accept the ceasefire and that the Qatari government has helped negotiate the agreement.

The United States has evacuated some 250 American citizens and its immediate family members of Israel by government, military and charter flights that started during the weekend, said a state department.
There are around 700,000 American citizens, most of the double American-Israeli citizens, who were in Israel.
