Celebrities join protesters in Venice ahead of Bezos-Sanchez wedding

The founder of billionaire Amazon, Jeff Bezos, and former journalist Lauren Sanchez arrived in Venice on Wednesday – by launching what should be a weekend of sumptuous marriage festivities for the couple, assisted by some of the biggest celebrities in the world and attracting the anger of the premises and demonstrators, who consider him a rude example of the enormous disparity between the alone and everyone.

Some 90 jets should arrive at local airports before the weekend event. About 200 guests are expected, including Ivanka Trump and his family, Mick Jagger, Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Venice City Hall published a directive on Wednesday by completing the region – insulating the guests of activists who have protested for weeks that the celebrations transform the city of gondolas and palaces into a private amusement park for the rich.

“There is only one thing that reigns now: money, money, money, so we are the losers,” said Nadia Rigo, a resident of Venice.

The festivities will start Thursday evening with an outdoor rally in the cloisters of Madonna Dell’orto, a medieval church in the central region of Cannaregio known for his lively nightlife, a source close to the issue told Reuters.

The date and place of marriage itself is still unknown, and some have hypothesized that Bezos, 61, and Sanchez, 55, may have already made the knot during a private ceremony in the United States.

Protesters were also in the city all week. Activists argue that Bezos-Sanchez’s marriage illustrates broader failures in municipal governance. The main one of their concerns is the lack of investment in affordable housing and essential services.

City officials defended marriage. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro described the event an honor for Venice, and the city denied that marriage would cause disturbances.

“Venice reveals itself once again as a world scene,” Brugnaro told the Associated Press, adding that he hoped to meet Bezos while he was in town.
