Coco 2 Is Officially in the Works at Pixar
During today’s Disney Company investor shareholders meeting, CEO Bob Iger shared that the studio and Pixar are officially working on a sequel to their Academy Award-winning animated feature Coco. The excitement for the family film starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Anthony Gonzales, which opened up the world to the Dia de los Muertos traditions in Mexico, has not died down. Its story of Miguel, a kid who accidentally crosses over to the land of the dead and goes on an adventure to reconnect with his family, captured hearts all over the globe.
This is what we know about Coco 2 from Iger’s announcement: “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure. And we can’t wait to share more soon.” It was also reported that director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina will be returning to helm the film with producer Mark Nielsen.
There’s currently a boat ride attraction for Coco in the works at Disney California Adventure as part of the Disneyland Resort’s expansion plans. We’re wondering if the new film might serve as an influence or even if the ride might open to coincide with the sequel’s release, neither have an exact date set for opening. The Coco ride will begin construction in 2026; Variety reports that Coco 2‘s release will come sometime in 2029.
The production of Coco 2 is in early stages and we’re ecstatic to find out what the sequel will entail. Family matriarch Coco passed away at the end of the first film, so you have to guess another Day of the Dead adventure is in store. As a Mexican American I’m personally delighted the film is expanding on the world of Mexico’s beloved annual celebration of the dead, and I can’t wait to see how Pixar is going to make us cry again. I still can’t listen to “Remember Me” without breaking into tears.
