Coinbase secures EU crypto license, swaps Ireland for Luxembourg

Jamming obtained a license in Luxembourg to provide cryptography services across the European Union and will make the country its central center in the region.

“Coinbase is entirely in Europe, and we defend the future of the crypto through the continent,” said Coinbase CEO, Brian Armstrong, in CNBC. “Mica has established the standard, and Luxembourg opens the way with its pro-enterprise climate and its thoughtful approach to regulations.”

Luxembourg has four policies linked to the blockchain that have been signed, while Ireland currently lacks laws specific to cryptography.

He added that Coinbase still invests massively in Ireland with “imminent” plans to add around 50 jobs to his local Dublin office. Seifert also moved personally to the country from Germany as CEO of the Irish Coinbase entity.

Globally, Coinbase is not the first to receive the authorization of cryptography through the EU – but it is one of the largest. Rivaux exchanges bybit, OKX and Bitgo have all obtained their own respective mica licenses.
