Doctors dealing with Colombian presidential hope Miguel Uibe Turbay warned that he was in an “extremely critical state” after being shot in the head 10 days ago.
Uibe underwent emergency surgery on Monday to stem brain bleeding, according to a hospital statement.
His wife said the hours of the operation would be essential and asked Colombians to pray for his recovery.
The June 7 attack against Uibe shocked the Colombians, who proved to be in their tens of thousands to attend silent demonstrations held across the country on Sunday.
“Miguel continues to fight for his life like never before,” said his wife, María Claudia Tarazona, outside the Santa Fe hospital, where he is treated.
“We need all prayers and words of love. It is love keeps him alive.”

Uiban’s own mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was kidnapped by Los extraditable in 1990 – an alliance created by the main drug lords.
It was retained hostage by them for five months before being killed during an attempt to sail.
Uibe has often quoted it as his inspiration to present himself to political functions “to work for our country”.
Los extraditable, who said they would prefer a grave in Colombia to a prison cell in the United States, removed and attacked renowned Colombians to try to force the government at the time to overthrow its extradition treaty with the United States.
