‘Dear Girl, Get Out!’: A Young Palestinian Escapes an Israeli Strike

It is the first hours of Monday, May 26. An air strike which, according to Israel, is aimed at a militant control center has just struck an old school where dozens of families have sheltered. Eighteen children were killed in the attack, according to local emergency services. And this scene of a girl trying to escape the flames is about to become a new symbol of the toll of the war on the youngest of Gaza. We interviewed witnesses and obtained an unpublished video of the consequences of the attack. And we found the girl. His name is Hanin Al-Wadie. The 5 -year -old girl survived but lost her younger parents and sister in the attack, according to other parents. Parts of his body are seriously burned. Hussein Mohsen, who heads one of the ambulance services of Gaza, was the one who saved Hanin and helped confirm his identity. Mohsen said that a metal door, hot red from the hot heat, separated him from the girl. We found that Hanin recovered from burns in the second and third degree at the Arabic Al-Ahli Hospital in the north of Gaza. When Israeli military operations intensified last month, she and her family were home to school. Hanan’s uncle, who is a trained nurse, takes care of her now. Another young girl, Ward Al-Sheikh Khalil, who was wrong in certain media reports while the one who crossed the flames, was also injured during the attack. Mohsen told us that he had also saved it from a bunch of rubble. Ward, who was five years old, was interviewed by a journalist working for the Turkey -state news agency later during the day. She explained how her mother and five siblings were killed in the strike. They were one of the 31 victims in total, according to the emergency services of Gaza. It is not known if the dead included combatants or activists. Hamas has already hidden among civilians. The Israeli army was not developed when it was contacted by the New York Times on the details of the attack. He referred to his only public statement on the attack, claiming that in his efforts to strike a militant command and control center, he had taken many measures to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise ammunition. Our analysis of the Suites imagery has shown fragments of an American guided bomb that the Israeli army has always used in Gaza. GBU-39s are designed to hit targets with greater precision. On this school site, more than half of the victims were children, adding to an increasing share of death among the youngest in Gaza. The Israeli army has also refused to further develop the choice of weapons and the high number of victims among children. Hanin faces a long recovery. For the moment, she continues to heal with her uncle by her side.
