Authorities say that the rescuers continue to search for missing residents and help city residents outside Medellin.
According to the authorities, at least 11 people were killed and 15 disappeared after a landslide in the city of Bello in northwest Colombia, according to the authorities.
Evacuation orders and rescue efforts continue one day after the landslide, government officials warning that heavy rains constitute a continuous threat to the region around Medellin, the second largest city in Colombia.
“We continue to support emergency and rescue work in Bello, where 11 people were unfortunately reported, at least 15 have disappeared and more than 1,500 people are in shelters,” said Medellin, Federico Gutierrez on Wednesday.
The flood waters overwhelmed the local sailors early Tuesday morning while the residents were sleeping.
A wave of mud has crossed Bello, a community crowded in the hills above Medellin, buried a dozen houses, sweeping away cars and leaving heaps of debris behind.
The rescuers used dogs, drones and other means to search for the missing. Shelters have been created in local schools and community centers.
The heavy rains mostly pose high risks For makeshift houses built in the hills, which can become unstable during periods of sustained precipitation. It is often the poorest residents in the country who live in these danger zones, many of whom fled a conflict in the rural areas of Colombia for the relative security of a city.
The town hall of Medellin also published evacuation orders for Villlatina on Tuesday, also on the outskirts of Medellin, declaring that 23 buildings would be demolished due to the risk of possible collapse. The town hall claims that the order was based on previous landslides at the end of May, and that the risk posed by the unsafe structures was aggravated by heavy recent rain.
About 60 houses were also ordered to evacuate in Medellin, which suffered damage during recent storms.
