Diplomacy will have a “last blow” in the next two weeks to bring the Israeli-Iran conflict to an end, according to an American diplomatic official and a European diplomatic manager, a window established by President Trump this week as he decide The United States must be involved in Israel’s offensive against Iran.
These efforts were underway on Friday while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met European foreign ministers in Geneva in the face of the current bombing campaign of Israel and the American military accumulation in the region.
The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, British Foreign Minister David Lammy, German Minister for Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul and the first diplomat of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, attended the Geneva meeting with Aragchi. Lammy had met the secretary of state Marco Rubio and the envoy of the Middle East Steve Witkoff in the White House on Thursday.
The Geneva meeting lasted almost four hours – twice as long as expected – and then Barrot said that there would be new talks and told journalists “that the problem of Iran’s nuclear program could not be resolved by military means” alone. Lammy said: “We were clear: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
Araghchi also spoke after the meeting and said that Iran had supported continuous discussions.
“Iran is ready to consider once again diplomacy,” he said, adding, “I emphasize that Iran’s defense capacities are not negotiable. (But) I express our desire to meet again in the near future.”
The supreme chief of Iran Ali Khamenei remains the ultimate decision maker, and it is not yet clear if the Israeli air strikes in progress and the imminent threat of American participation will bring him closer to a diplomatic outlet ramp that during the last proposal for a proposal a few weeks ago. The United States offerWho is still on the table, would have allowed Iran to have a civil nuclear program if he agreed not to enrich uranium on his soil. Instead, Iran would be able to buy fuel enriched from other countries. A suggestion involved an omanic idea to establish a regional consortium which would allow enrichment for civil purposes under surveillance by AIEA and the United States
Khamenei, 86, would still be fighting cancer and hides Israeli strikes. He did not respond to the openings of several countries seeking to help defuse the conflict.
It is not entirely clear how the Iranian government is functional at the moment. Internet connectivity and international calls Iran are difficult to complete, according to the sources of the region. The cyber attacks paralyzed the banking system, and from Thursday, several diplomats recognized that they made more difficult to organize discussions in person with Aragchi.
The current Israeli aggression can also raise fears of Khamenei to communicate, given the concerns about the avoidance of the interceptions of intelligence of the signals which could be used target Him, a suggested diplomatic source.
Everything Aragchi discusses with the West will ultimately need the approval of the Supreme Chief, and American expectations for a breakthrough during this meeting are weak. But it’s a start.
It remains to be seen whether the conversation in Geneva has produced an indication of whether Iran is still open to talks directed with the United States – not only European nations – which is also what Witkoff has also tried to initiate by its own personal awareness, said an American official.
Turkey and Oman, as well as European countries, notably Italy and Norway, have proposed to organize direct or indirect talks between the United States and Iran, if Tehran was to choose this path, according to two European diplomatic sources. The Italian Foreign Minister said Rubio told him on Thursday that the United States was ready for direct negotiations with Iranian counterparts, and a French diplomat also said that Rubio had also transmitted the same message to Barrot. The French Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Secretary of State should speak again after the Geneva consultations.
Trump has expressed his frustration in recent weeks that, although Iran has come to the negotiating table, his leaders have not shown no desire to really negotiate. Iran did not offer any response for two weeks to the most recent Witkoff proposal of Witkoff and has neither refused nor accepted his conditions, a familiar American official told CBS News with efforts. Instead, Iranian leaders have published press statements, but negotiators did not directly engage in details or discussed the terms of the offer. This lack of substantial engagement has raised doubts of the Trump administration as to whether Iran started negotiations in good faith or simply did not miss the clock.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly asked if Iranian leaders played with Trump and used this uncertainty to justify his unilateral decision to launch military strikes. Several American and foreign diplomats have indicated that Mr. Trump did not bless strikes or explicitly said to Netanyahu that he should proceed with them. Diplomatic sources recognize that Iranian leaders can also wonder the degree of coordination between the United States and Israel and can also be uncertain as to whether diplomacy initiated by the United States was a cunning to justify the use of military force that Netanyahu has long recommended.
But an American official argued that Mr. Trump’s interest in diplomacy was authentic, just like his aversion to train the American army in a war in the Middle East – in particular without a clear meaning of what was going to happen, if the Iranian regime collapses.
American and European diplomats confirmed that there were confidential conversations on which would lead Iran then, if nuclear sites and equipment can be obtained, and potential benefits of the environment and health for regional allies from military strikes on nuclear installations.
In the meantime, the president always has the possibility of choosing to use the military force, including the potential for use for the first time in history Massive ammunition penetratorA 30,000 pound bunker bunker bomb to destroy underground nuclear installations in Fordo.
In theory, Trump maintains the ability to launch a strike while he is out of the city in his golf station in Bedminster, New Jersey on Friday and Saturday, sources said. A secure suite is installed before its arrival at any location outside the city, and it also has access to secure communications which would allow it to give an order along the way. During his stay at his Florida golf complex, Mar-A-Lago, he ordered a strike on Syria in 2017 and on an Iranian general in 2020.
In the meantime, the American intelligence assessment remains that Khamenei did not ordered the resumption of the nuclear weapons program that Iran suspended in 2003. But Iran has accumulated an enriched nuclear fuel that could potentially be paired with an advanced missile or a more rudimentary weapon in a short time if the supreme leader had ordered. There remains an open question if the Fordo bombing would encourage Iranian leaders to sprint towards the creation of a bomb or to end the program.
