Egypt's female farm workers face dire working conditions

Last year, Egypt set a new record for fruit and vegetable exports: almost 7 million tonnes, valued at 6 billion euros, with 20% intended for Europe. According to the World Bank, agriculture is the sector which employs the largest proportion of women in the country: around 45% nationally and up to 94% in higher Egypt. But in the fields, the working conditions of the 5 million agricultural women are disastrous: no contracts, half of the salaries of men and hot temperatures. Basic organizations intervene now, campaign to formalize the work of women, demand a fair salary, ensure labor safety and fight for recognition.
