Epic Games and Section 9 have an atmospheric action-adventure in End of Abyss | preview


During the window of the Fest Game Summer, section 9 Interactive made its debut at its next atmospheric action adventure, End of the abyssWith a whole new trailer.

I was able to get a practical overview of section 9 of the developer. The publication plans of Epic Games to launch the end of Abyss in 2026 for the PC via the Epic Games store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S.

Players may wish the list on each platform. The game has a view from top to bottom of a character with a large helmet which must explore a mysterious underground complex. It takes place in a dark science fiction world by emphasizing exploration, supported by engaging and tense fights.

Mattias Ottvall, co-creator of End of Abyss in section 9 Interactive, showed me the game. He showed me the game for a while, then I took over the demo as a player. From the start, he had a scary look. I knew that I was going to meet things in the dark that were going to be frightening.

In the depths of the complex, you are sent on a mission to investigate disruption of unknown origin. It turns into a heartbreaking descent through a broken and abandoned world. The players assume the role of the young combat technician, Cel, as she discovers the truth behind the abandoned areas of the installation and confronts the monstrous creatures that wander them.

His team was attracted on site due to cryptic messages that could be a call for help. This must descend into the corridors of a sprawling complex, where broken machines whisper depths, and nothing players meet players is entirely human. In the emotional kinematics, you see grotesque creatures similar to zombies that were human.

Now they are something you need to give a large berth. You can scan them and find out more about what afflicts them, and find out if you are likely to be really dead or just to hide and wait for prey.

End of the abyss. It is an intense battle because it takes several explosions of hunting rifle to shoot one.

It has to fight to survive. Overpassed by twisted horrors, players must improve their equipment and adapt, pushing their limits just to stay alive against the overwhelming pressure of the installation in which you are trapped. Fortunately, there are a lot of ammunition. But it is easy to run out during the fight, especially since it fights in nearby neighborhoods most of the time.

The demo took place around 10% in the full match. Cell has been separated from its other crew members and has to go to the rider alone. It has a scanning device which can identify almost everything – even things integrated into the walls – and which encourages exploration.

It was very difficult for me to aim, because I had to unlearn how to play a shooter. Normally, I play Call of Duty and I put the left trigger of a controller to aim. But this time, it made my character make a roller forward. Instead, I had to use the right stick to aim, and it was quite difficult, because it is difficult to align a blow when you look at the action from above. Pulling a pistol, I had to waste a first blow, then adapt quickly to start putting balls in monsters.

I resisted myself much when Ottval gave me a shotgun and a lot of ammunition. But as you see in the trailer, if you have a giant bulbous enemy, you can shoot it and a piece breaks and will start to attack you. So you have more than one enemy that comes to you. And if you turn one of the biggest characters, it can be divided into two characters of equal size to come after you. And then there were small creatures that I had to pulling with precision or stabbing with a knife.

All of this took a long time, thanks to the descending view. And that meant that I was wasting a lot of time trying to make shots when the enemies closed on my and struck me. With the boss’s fight, a few sure of the boss killed me. I also had to flee the creatures constantly, stabbed in my arm with a gunshot and restore part of my health.

Fortunately, if you die, you can reappear close enough to your death point. There are backup stations where you can reappear if you die. All your progress is recorded, just like everything you have picked up and has put your inventory. If you unlock a door, it will always be open when you come back to it.

And players must explore the lost paths. You need to use your scanner a lot to detect the things you don’t see. For example, there is a place on a wall. And it is an indicator that it is important. If you scan the wall, you can see that it is weak. If you find explosives, you can make a hole through this wall.

The monsters seem frightening in the trailer, but not so much above. However, I found that they were so frightening and that the space so confined that they made me panic when they came after me. In this sense, it was almost like a horror game.

Players can navigate in connection paths and discover hidden areas using their scanner and unlocked tools along the way. The trails open as the players strengthen themselves, allowing them to return to corridors and forgotten secrets once sealed.

I have never arrived so far in my demo because I have never seen red.

Section 9 Interactive is a small studio founded by veterans developers of Little Nightmares, Little Nightmares 2 and Littlebigplanet PS Vita. Their ambition and passion are to create games with convincing visuals and interesting worlds to explore. I do not know much about the story, apart from Cel is trying to find contact in a very scary place filled with things that try to kill it. It’s frightening.
