When the eighth Mission: Impossible The film changed its title to “The final calculation“We all had the same thought: the character of Tom Cruise, Ethan Hunt, was going to die. It would have been the most obvious way to add a real purpose to the franchise, but We now know that it does not happen. Instead, Ethan lives, Just like his sworn enemy, the entity. And, in a new interview, the scriptwriter-director Christopher McQuarrie discussed these crucial decisions and many others.
In an extended spoiler Conversation with EmpireMcQuarrie admitted that he had played with the idea of killing his main character and even had an idea of how to do it. “Everything is on the table,” said Mcquarrie. “There was a moment in the modification of the final sequence of the film where Ethan runs in this cloud of clouds where I thought:” If you cut in his grave at the moment, you would feel that the sacrifice was sufficient. Wow is very, very effective “.”
In the end, however, he did not think that killing Ethan would have served the story in the right way. “The idea of a conclusion of a story being the death of this character … They are not the same,” said Mcquarrie. “When you completely bind history, history ceases to be. And it’s not life. Stories take place, that the films do it or not.”
Which, of course, leaves the door open for more Assignment movies. “Do I think [Mission] Is my rear view mirror? I mean yes, “said McQuarrie, adding the warning that” Tom Cruise is a force of nature, and very, very delicate. “And so, admits the director, he could one day come back to the franchise, but only” if it was the film that I wanted to do desperately “.
Another fascinating decision taken by Mcquarrie at the end of Final calculation was the only one not to defeat the unstoppable AI, the entity. The colleague winner of the Oscars, Guillermo Del Toro, said that he wanted the entity to shout during his defeat (another revelation of the interview), but Mcquarrie chose not to do it and chose not to kill him at all. Instead, it is simply contained, a decision that McQuarrie has taken up on the AI as a whole
“You cannot put the genius back in the bottle,” said McQuarrie about AI. “Really experienced experts in this area, who have been with him since childhood, told me that the only way you can now fight AI is with AI. It will never disappear. Destroying the entity was actually a kind of hollow and empty idea…. [Destroying the Entity is] Do not prevent someone else from making an entity. And so the idea of Ethan keeping the entity at the end was fully antithetic to everything we believe – and yet, there, it was emotionally in the film, and this is how the end became. »»
Whether or not you agree with the Mcquarria’s thinking process here – and we do it above all – it is refreshing to hear it explain why the decision was made. These are things that he and his team were clearly thought for a long time, and no decision was made lightly.
