Five members of a United Nations convoy of aid to the Sudanese city torn apart by the El-Fasher War were killed during an attack, the United Nations agencies said.
Several people were also injured and several trucks burned during the assault on Monday evening, which took place near El-Koma in the state of Darfur du Nord, they added.
The two parties in the exhausting civil war of Sudan – rapid paramilitary forces (RSF) and the regular army – have accused each other of hitting the United Nations convoy with drones.
The UN did not say how the attack had occurred, but called for an urgent investigation and that the authors were taken into account.
The convoy consisted of 15 trucks from the UN food and children’s agencies, who said it was “devastating” that the aid did not reach the “F-Fasher” struck in famine.
El-Fasher is the last major location in northern Darfur under the control of the army. Civilians and soldiers have been attacked by the RSF for over a year.
The convoy was trying to reach the children and families of the city with food and nutritional supplies saving when it was attacked, said the joint declaration of the World Food Program (WFP) and the United Nations UNICEF children’s agency.
After the attack, the El-Koma emergency room, a group of local volunteer respondents, published a video of a burned truck charged with Facebook supplies. The group blamed the attack on the Sudanese army.
El-Koma, which is controlled by the RSF, has already been the target of frequent attacks in the conflict between the paramilitary group and the army.
The attacks on the city resulted in civilian deaths and damaged key infrastructure.
El-Koma emergency room said at least 89 people were killed or injured after Sudanese army war planes launched air strikes in the city on Sunday. The army did not respond to this accusation.
According to the Sudan Tribune news website, planes hit a market occupied in El-Koma.
The war, which started over two years ago, created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
Eujin Byun, spokesperson for the United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday, said more than four million people had fled since the start of the conflict.
The civil war broke out in 2023 following a vicious struggle for power between the army and the RSF.
The two had jointly organized a coup to derail the transition from Sudan to democracy, before their commanders fell.
