For New York City mayoral candidates, the future could hinge on ranked ballots

Tuesday, New York is using the choice of choice classified during its primary elections mayors Democrats, and this could have a significant impact on the result given the striking contrast between the two most frequent candidates: Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani.

The current mayor, Eric Adams, is not in primary school. The former democrat still plans to run for the mayor’s elections of November 4 as independent, but seems to have been irreversibly damaged by allegations of corruption.

No republican, on the other hand, has seriously challenged the mayor since the former mayor Michael Bloomberg left the GOP in 2007. The Republicans settled on their candidate: the founder and animator of Radio Guardian Angels Curtis Sliwa, who received only 28 percent of the 2021 vote in a race essentially to two people with Adams.

In other words, the winner of Democratic primary is the clear favorite to become mayor.

For Cuomo, this would represent a fairly rapid return after having resigned from his post as governor of New York State in 2021 following allegations of sexual harassment formulated by more than a dozen women. Cuomo denied allegations but admitted having used an obsolete or condescending language with women.

He also faced the threat of a federal indictment linked to his governor’s time.

Mamdani could rise with the help of a powerful basic movement, but with little leadership experience to lead a metropolis with around 300,000 municipal employees. In addition, his firm pro-Palestinian declarations caused discomfort in certain districts of a city that saw battles and demonstrations both on campuses and outside, since the Gaza War precipitated by the attack of Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023.

An Emerson College survey revealed that Mamdani received about two thirds of the support of respondents under the age of 50, while Cuomo had a significant advantage among older respondents.

Rather than choosing a single candidate on Tuesday, primary voters reach the five classification in order of preference. These votes could determine a winner if no candidate reaches more than 50% of the votes of the first choice.

Supporters of the system say that this encourages citizens to be more invested in the result, and they do not have to compromise with their first choice.

But the votes of choice classified would not be counted before July 1, and in 2021, there were more than a few hiccups in the main process. With increasing distrust for election results in the United States, voters may not understand how a candidate who seemed to have a comfortable lead in the first place on the night of the elections could finally lose if he behaves badly to obtain votes of second or third choice.

Cuomo: experienced, controversial

Cuomo, 67, has been in the eyes of the public for more than four decades, helping the campaigns of his father Mario Cuomo. He was then secretary of housing in the first administration of Bill Clinton, and barely a few days ago, the former president approved it.

Cuomo has more individual donors among retired New Yorkers and residents of certain expensive districts of Manhattan, a donor database on the New York City Finance Board website. In addition, Bloomberg billionaire paid $ 8.3 million into a political action committee to support Cuomo, who he said is the right person to protect New York against the impact of President Donald Trump’s policies.

Cuomo brings a pugnacious style to the table. He has more than three years of experience as a state prosecutor, followed by a decade as governor.

As governor, he won praise for authority and empathic press conferences in the first weeks of the COVVI-19 pandemic, performing while Trump as president offered a series of mixed statements, minimize the virus.

Cuomo capitalized on the right PR by writing a book on leadership lessons, but he was then accused of presenting the legislators to present deception declarations on the deaths of nursing homes in New York during the first year of the pandemic.

The Ministry of Justice to the second term of Trump opened an investigationAlthough many supporters of Cuomo think it was motivated by the animus between the two men, because other accused of lying at the Congress have not been studied.

Mamdani: buzzworthy, not proven

Like Trump, Mamdani is from Queens, which is roughly the extent of their similarities.

Mamdani, 33, was born in Uganda into a family of Indian origin and could become the first Muslim mayor of the city.

He is also a member of the Democratic Socialists of America – not necessarily a transmission contract for New Yorkers since the late mayor David Dinkins was also a member for a while.

Mamdani, with four years of experience as New York State legislator, has campaigned on affordability and the cost of living, floating the idea of free public transport for some. The New York Times editorAmong other things, have denounced many of his ideas as unrealistic.

He accused Cuomo of using obsolete language with regard to the population of unauthorized immigrants from New York.

“A former disgrace governor who describes undocumented immigrants as” illegal “is not what we need,” said Mamdani in an interview with the replacement site. He also qualified immigration and customs application (ICE) a “thug” agency.

Mamdani has received more small donations than any candidate for the mayor in the past three decades, and his progressive diplomas are not in doubt – he has received approvals from the American senator Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio -Cortez, the member of the American Congress whose district includes New York parties.

Mamdani strongly criticizes Israeli policies, but denounced the allegations that he is anti -Semitic.

Other Democratic candidates

The New York controller, Brad Lander, questions about 10% in several surveys with regard to first -place votes and could emerge as the second favorite choice of many Cuomo or Mamdani voters. A frank opponent of the repression of Trump’s immigration, Lander was in the eye of the public last week when he was briefly owned by federal agents.

The other primary candidates include the president of the Municipal Council Adrienne Adams, the state senator Zellnor Myrie, the director of hedge funds Whitney Tilson and the former city controller Scott Strnger.

Although no official alliance has been announced, some of the late candidates said that Cuomo was not particularly deserved and should be placed far in the classification of ballots – or not at all classified.

“Make sure Andrew Cuomo is nowhere near the Town Hall,” Lander told Wnyc Radio on Monday.

Where is Eric Adams?

Adams, a retired police captain and former state legislator and head of Brooklyn, was elected in 2021 as a centrist democrat, but three years later, was officially accused of accepting illegal campaign contributions and travel discounts of a Turkish and others. In addition, some members of the Adams administration have been involved in other scandals.

Adams’ best chance is that anyone wins – either Cuomo or Mamdani – will be so hated that he can cut his own return, although so far, there is no wave of land supporting his allegations to be the victim of an unjustified prosecution.

Adams cultivated a warm relationship with Trump, especially after both, and finally left the Democrats. The Ministry of Justice earlier this year decided to abandon the case against Adams, a move The President judge was disturbed by But essentially helpless to stop.

The Democrats cried and alleged that a counterpart was at stake – abandoned the accusations in exchange for cooperation with the aggressive plans of application and expulsion of the Trump administration. Adams denied that this was the case.

Cuomo and Mamdani do not agree, but everyone said they would not follow the example of Adams and repel when they are justified against Trump immigration officials.
