Fortnite is about to unleash AI-powered NPCs

For better or for worse, Fortnite Will let the creators make NPCs who abandon the script and become freestyle. A new tool in the publisher Unreal for Fortnite (UEFN) will allow developers to create their own NPCs fed by AI. Their types of voice, their delivery styles and their personality traits are all customizable.

Epic demonstrated technology Tuesday during his speech “State of Unreal”. The company said that the NPC generated its responses in real time during the presentation. It was created using “around 20 lines” of fast text.

The demo character, Mr. Buttons, was created only to persuade the player to press a large red button in a room. After the presenter asked questions about the signs of the environment warning the button pressure, the IA bot has persisted. “Signs, you say? Simple suggestions from those who lack imagination. After all, the rules are made to be slowly pushed aside. Do you not agree?”

As impressive as it is, the demo has also shown the current limits of technology. First of all, it is an AI cat that turns, not a living with interruptions and overlaps. In addition, the presenter could only speak when maintaining a button to activate the microphone. After each question, Mr. Buttons would stop for a few moments to treat. He tried to hide this with vocal loads like “Hmmm”, “Ahhhh” and “Ummm”.

Epic games

Technology is based on Dark Vader’s appearance Last month in Fortnite: Galactic Battle. Gémini 2.0 Flash Generated the dialogue of the Sith Lord, which was made to resemble the voice of James Earl Jones using Elevenlabs Ai Tech. (His succession approved it.)

How did it go? Well, Ai Vader has become viral for … probably not the reasons that Epic hoped. On the right side, he did not quite transform into AI Seinfeld levels of offensivity. But a widely shared video showed that Dark drop an F bomb in response to a streamer using “Freaking” and “Fucking” in a vocal prompt, Vader repeated the words. (Ironically, he then scolded the player for using a hard language.) Epic pushed a hotfix and promised that it would not happen again.

Fortnite The creators will be able to make NPCs in the UEFN publisher later this year. You can consult the demonstration of Mr. Buttons below.
